Show l Editorials College Center Second Level During spring student elections of 1983 a survey was taken of st students students' dents dents' feelings about adding a second level to the existing College Center The results clearly showed that students felt that more space and additional services were needed Following that survey the College Center Board with the approval of the State Division of Facilities Construction and Management contracted with the architectural firm Ericson Astle and arid Associates to make a formal study of the proposed project Following an anI I- I extensive research project they presented several recommendations to the College Center Board The Astle Ericson study determined that several areas need to be expanded upgraded upgrade and enlarged to meet the demands of our present student population Those recommendations included expanding and enlarging the Student Services function providing additional study lounge space enlarging the Food Service operation allowing additional sp space for forthe forthe the College Store and developing a new larger space for student activities Ericson Astle recommended that a second level could be constructed because when the building was originally built the support system was constructed to allow an additional level The building was built in 1974 at a cost of 12 million dollars and included only the main level the lower level was left vacant Ten years later the estimated cost is approximately 5 5 million to add approximately square feet and remodel some of the existing space SL students were assessed fees for the first time in 1961 for the construction construction construction con con- of a College Center As construction and expansion have taken place additional fees have been assessed With the proposed addition fees r will be increased to cover the bonds required for financing the construction After considerable discussion the Utah Technical College Institutional Council approved the original study by Astle Upon completion of the study and presentation to the Council some members were still hesitant about approving the plan to add to the College Center Their concerns were the increased cost to students and providing adequate study space for students When those concerns were addressed the Institutional Council approved the project in their October meeting and have asked the Utah State Board of Regents for their approval of the project Points West also approves and supports the proposed addition to the College Center Anyone visiting the Student Service area realizes the i crowded crowde conditions conditio and lack of of privacy needed to conduct conduct business At lunch time all we have to do is walk through the cafeteria to to see the crowded areas As we visit other campuses we realize our student activity area is inadequate and needs up updating lating As we walk around the building and see students studying and lounging in all available areas we hope students agree that additional study space is a prime need Utah Tech's College Center space is utilized to its maximum at the present time As students we need to plan and prepare for the future We encourage your support of the addition to the College Center |
