Show publisher enters race for congress L L bish taylor publisher of the times independent last week announced his candidacy for the republican nomination for congress in the first district AA e A 21 mr taylor who has published the times independent for 29 years vears and served in numerous public positions in grand county outlined his general position on major issues in the following statement 1 I am opposed to this nation coming becoming be involved in a foreign war however I 1 believe in an impregnable national defense which will not only protect this nation from aggression but which will also uphold the monroe doctrine much needed social legislation has been placed on the statute books during the past seven seve n years but the present adminis administration administrate trat i on has failed to meet the most im important P octant problem that of economic security in our nation if w we e are to continue in america a high standard of living if we hope for better things in the future our business enterprises mu must mast st prosper 1 I favor a program that is not hostile to free american enterprise the elimination of legislation tb that a t is hampering and discouraging american business will go a long way toward solving many of our ills 1 I think I 1 know something about utah and its needs our mining live livestock and agricultural interests are the key to the prosperity and continued growth of our state if I 1 should be nominated and elected my first thought would be the welfare of utah at the present time conditions in the world are in such a state of confusion and changes are coming so rapidly that it would be foolish for me to discuss issues in detail this I 1 intend to do during the campaign mr taylor was born 48 years ago in moab the son of arthur A and sena jensen taylor his father was a pioneer settler of southeastern utah and for many years was an important stockman of utah his paternal grandfather norman taylor was a member of the original band of utah pioneers who arrived in salt lake valley july 24 1847 his maternal grandparents natives of enmark denmark came across the plains with a handcart company in 1858 at the age of IS 19 mr taylor took over the editorship of the grand valley times now the times independent at moab and has as continuously published the paper since that time for a period of 29 years in addition to this enterprise he is interested in livestock and agriculture during the past 30 years he has served in various public capaci ties he is at present chairman of f the grand county board of commissioners a position he has held for six years he was town clerk of moab for 12 years and a member of the board of town trustees for six years he aided in establishing the grand county public hospital as a tax supported institution and for 14 years was manager of the institution in 1935 he was elected chairman of the advisory board of utah grazing district no 6 comprising grand and san juan counties at present he is chairman of grazing district no 9 which was created when the original district was divided this week mr taylor was elected by the cattle mem members bers of the nine edv sory boards of utah to represent them at a ten day session at denver to lo make final recommendations on the federal grazing r ode rode mr taylor was last year named a member of the committee of fifteen appointed pursuant to a law enacted by the last legislature to study school laws end crid make recommend recommendations at ions for needed changes this committee submitted its report to the governor of utah on july 1 following a year of research and study taylor was president of 01 the utah state press association in 1933 and is now chairman of the legislative committee of that organization |
