should be fed to livestock and the profits of the industry kept at home future farmer and 4 H club members have proved the profitable practice of feeding good animals at home plans are now being made to enlarge upon the livestock activities of club members by encouraging them to feed groups of animals instead of one or two which has been the customary practice there is a ready market for such cattle with which LO toI colace ace grass fed stock vj large retail marketing compary company has refused to use grass fed beef the market men contend secretary of agriculture henry A wallace says farmers now pay city people something like annually for power and power machinery whereas before the world war they sold po power we r in the form of work anim animals alsworth worth several hundred million dollars annually prospects for a good rate of hog marketing this summer call attention to the f fact act that the old packing season of the livestock trade no longer holds good reports colin kennedy in successful farming fo for august whether due to shifts in hog raising and marketing or to changes in in market outlets and eating habits or both recent years have seen radical changes in the handling of the hog bog kill A lot of pork that used to be stored is now being sold fresh in cuts and shapes not dreamed of a few years ago even hams are in packer hands days instead of months thanks to quick curing methods and the percentage of the remainder that formerly went into longtime long time cure and storage is finding its way into cans or into sausage that quality meat is not possible w with ith grass fed animals the profitable development of the feed lot is the answer to this problem utah farmer dry weather during most of july seriously retarded the development of commercial truck crops rainfall came in many areas late in july and the first few days of august crops were revived and the outlook ford for yields ds of crops maturing during the late summer and fall was improved over much of the producing area from michigan and indiana eastward the moisture supply is inadequate to carry crops for long without additional rainfall in the western states conditions are fairly good except that a shortage of irrigation water threatens in some localities cali ties according to 0 rank frank andrews s state t a t e agricultural statistician ranges are in poorer condition than for any year at this date except 1934 as far as 1923 both feed and water are becoming too scarce f for or the safety ety of the range animals up to date however feed has not been scarce enough to reduce proportionally the condition of cattle and sheep the present range condition is due first to freezing weather in june which killed a large portion of the forage on the summer ranges most of these ranges are in the higher altitudes from to feet above sea level |
