Show horticulturist to conduct fruit tour ahi cites will be the starting ting place of a two day educational tour for fruit growers monday august 7 at a am m all fruit growers in the state are invited to make this trip which includes visits to representative orchards and packing houses between brigham city and Spring springville ville announces dr A L stark extension horticulturist first on the itinerary is a visit to the smithers orchard in brigham city where new varieties of peaches and berries will be viewed the south haven and sun gold are new types of peaches in this country just as the boysenberry is a new type berry all three of these fruits may be found in the smithers orchard young and old orchards heavy producing trees pruning soil management packing methods and visits to packing houses in the intermountain ter mountain country are scheduled for consideration on the trip special emphasis is being placed on marketing methods and efficient production dr stark points out the frozen food experiment being carried on at the rocky mountain packing corporation in ogden will be studied dr leonard pollard of the utah experiment station is carrying on research in freezing peas and lima beans and professor A J morris is working with frozen fruits for use in lee ice cream professor F M coe of the department of horticulture at the college is seeking to establish the suitability of utah fruit for frozen packing for use in frozen products this new method of preservation may prove to be a valuable aid to the marketing problem dr stark says coupled with efficient production this new method should greatly increase the desirability of utah fruit in all seasons of the year other items to be considered on the tour include spraying demonstration disease and pest control treatment for pear blight control and fertilizer treatment for I 1 |
