Show WHAT HAS BROUGHT THE CHANGE all last year president roosevelt was talking govern ment retrenchment and the necessity for balancing the bud get the mounting indebtedness of the federal government and the perpetual deficit were inviting targets for his po lotical enemies and apparently the president was deter mined to wipe them out now all at once he swings to the other extreme and advocates an increase rather than a decrease in government spending and lending what has wrought the change in his attitude and viewpoint certainly there must be some ur gent reason for his change of front what is it Is it because the president feels the support of even his own party slipping away from him as indicated by a number of recent congressional acts Is it just the old question of a man having numerous friends as long his money lasts if he is a generous spender but as soon as his money is gone the friends also disappear in other words have the members of congress become so drunk with government patronage and spending that they have no use for an administration that does not keep up the mad carousal or is it something more serious that threatens our political and economic structure that impels him to loosen again the purse strings and enlarge the feast does he see the handwriting on the wall of the fifteen to eighteen million unemployed of this country who refuse to go half fed ragged badly sheltered and without hope while a small handful of gluttonous ones have hogged and cornered the money natural rb resources sources and opportunities of life and like the proverbial dog in the niL manger nger cannot eat the hay and will not allow the ox to do so for our part we prefer the borrowing and spending program to such a revolution as spain has been enduring even if the national debt reaches a sum impossible of repayment the international bankers and their privately owned federal reserve system will have all the money and credits anyhow and what difference does it make what amount the books show to be due them in its final analysis the government has the right under the constitution to issue and regulate the money and this is the only way the debt can ever be paid by the issuance and regulation of money and interest so put the people to work usefully and give them money to satisfy their needs we will cross the other bridge when we come to it |
