Show Bachauer competition begins Sixty-one of the most promising young pianists in the world have been selected to compete in the June 18-28 Utah Symphony Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. Representing 23 countries, the pianists were selected from an elite field of ISO applicants. "These are first-rate pianists and many have been previous winners or competitors in every major piano competition in the world," said Paul Pollei, Founder-Director of the Bachauer competition, which will be held at Symphony' Hall under the auspices of the Utah Symphony. Pianists from Brazil, France, West Germany, Korea, the Soviet Union, Canada, Great Britain, China, Chi-na, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Zambia, South Africa, Belgium, Romania, Venezuela, the United States, and other countries, will be vying for up to $50,000 in cash and prizes in one of the richest piano competitions competi-tions in the world. "The overall training and talent of the competitors this year is higher than in previous years," Mr. Pollei added. Competition winners will share in more than $50,000 worth of cash, prizes and concerts. The grand prize winner will receive a debut performance in Alice Tully Hall in New York, a Model L Steinway Grand Piano, a cash award of $3,000 and concert and recital appearances, including a performance perform-ance with the Utah Symphony. The second prize winner will receive re-ceive $5,000, a special performance perform-ance with the Utah Symphony and other associated performances, and the third prize winner will receive re-ceive $3,000 cash and concert and recital engagements. More than $10,000 in cash will be awarded to other finalists. In addition to concert engagements engage-ments throughout the Untied States, The Piano Teachers National Na-tional Association of Japan has invited in-vited the winner of the competition to present a series of recitals in that country. Tours of New Zealand, Australia. Austra-lia. Brazil and France are presently being arranged. Jurors in the competition will include in-clude world-renowned musicians, including: Peter Averi, Cyprien Katsaris, Alexander Peskanov, Joanne Baker, Seymour Bernstein, Bern-stein, Ana Maria Trenchi de Bot-tazzi, Bot-tazzi, Dean Elder, Bradford Gowen, Rex Hobcroft, Leslie 'Howard, Anne Koscielny, Yasuko Nakayama, Arie Vardi, Adam Wibrowski and Zhou Guang-Ren, as well as Alec Sherman, husband of the late Gina Bachauer. While the competition will feature fea-ture some of the world's best young pianists and the Utah Symphony Sym-phony it will also include international interna-tional guests and royalty. Princess Irene of Greece, a close friend and former student of the late Gina Bachauer, will serve as royal patroness pat-roness of the competition. The two toured together, sharing the spotlight spot-light as soloists in concert. Princess Prin-cess Irene is the daughter of Queen Fredericka and King Paul of Greece. KBYU-FM will broadcast live the semi-finals and the finals, and KUED will produce a 90-minute documentary with host Martin Bookspan, to be broadcast at a later la-ter date.
