Show OUR ENGLISH SPEECH by THOMAS ARKLE CLARK late dean 0 of f men alen university Uni venity of illinois Illi noi it Is more and more a matter of il amazement to me to hear how generally e ra ily we misuse t the rn language guage it Is not to ce be wondered at that the illiterate 14 do so they have had little tea teaching citing crha perhaps Ps and that not the best and they hear dally daily and hourly far more incorrect speech than they do otherwise we should expect them I 1 I 1 to blunder it Is those who have had training who amaze and disappoint me the hilgh school graduate who has had twelve years of formal drill in U english and who comes often from it a home in which english Is correctly spoken or nr should be and tile the college graduate who has had four additional dit ional lonal years of drill in en english and an association with those who should use correct speech even it if they do not these at least should be adept enough in the management of their native tongue not to fall fail constantly into egregious blunders I 1 listened today to a man who has had nn an excellent tome training ills his father and mother both having gr graduated ad from college and lie bilms himself if has had seven years of collegiate and professional exper experience lence since lie he left the high school enough 1 certainly to teach him something lie ile counseled his hearers to lay oft off certain practices he that 0 other ti 1 c r things were going to happen he spoke of the of doing those kind of things and spoke of some one who had bad been penalized pen for the committing of some indiscretion ile he ended by saying that everyone should do their best now all these errors are simple but quite apparent if one would give them even a slight consideration and being recognized they might be avoided why do we speak so badly because we have never come to 0 a realization of the fact that correct eeck Is of any vital importance when people tell me that they cannot spell or remember peoples names or get up in the morning I 1 know very well that they have never realized with any keenness the real importance and value of these things if a man could realize that lie he was losing and social standing and mone money through the cru prudence crud dence enco of his speech eili lie would set himself assiduously to correcting it 0 1932 western no newspaper cpr union |
