By lopping off the unnecessary calories from rich, forbidden for-bidden desserts, streamlined versions can be turned out that are well within most dieters' limits. And it can be done without sacrificing even a little bit of the eating pleasure! How is this calorie magic performed? Take a look at the recipe for our "Streamlined Strawberry Sponge". You'll find that we've left out all the sugar normally used, and, instead, have used the new non-caloric non-caloric sweetener, Sucaryl. This means that we've subtracted all of the calories of sugar, and added nonerThe streamlined version contains con-tains only 29 calories per serving, a saving of 65 calories over the original recipe! And because this sweetener gives a natural, sugarlike sugar-like sweetness to cooked and baked foods, you won't be able to taste the difference. For party fare, unmold and garnish each strawberry sponge with fresh strawberries and mint. It may not seem fair, but non-dieters, too, will enjoy this delectable summer-time treat. Streamlined Strawberry Sponge 1 envelope unflavored gelatin Yi tablespoons lemon juice cup cold water 1 pint strawberries, 1 tablespoon Sucaryl solution crushed or 24 tablets, crushed 2 egg whites Soften gelatin in water in the top of a double boiler. Add Sucaryl and lemon juice; heat, stirring until gelatin dissolves. Remove from heat and add the crushed berries. Let stand until mixture begins to thicken; then beat until light and fluffy. Beat egg whites until stiff; fold into the gelatin mixture. Spoon into 6 individual molds or into a large 3-cup mold, lightly oiled. Chill until firm. Makes 6 servings. Each serving contains 29 CALORIES; 2.9 grams protein; 0.2 'gram fat; 4.5 grams carbohydrate. If made with sugar, each serving would contain 94 CALORIES. |
