Show 'Marriage of Figaro' Opens New Opera Schedule at Utah University presented in commemoration of the Mozart Bicentennial. "Figaro" will be the first opera to be presented on the U campus in more than 15 years except for seven Summer Festival operatic productions. A cast of veteran vocal and stage talent was announced this week for the forthcoming production produc-tion of "The Marriage of Figaro" at the University of Utah. Two performances of the Mozart Mo-zart opera have been scheduled at Kingsbury Hall on the U of U campus for March 29 and 31. The title role of Figaro will be sung by Arthur Kent former baritone bari-tone with the Metropolitan Opera. Other principals in the opera include in-clude Marvin Sorensen as Count Almaviva; Cohleen Bischoff as Countess Almaviva; Jewel Johnson John-son Cutler as Suanna; Ann Car-dall Car-dall as Cherubino; Emma Hemple as Marchellina; Glade Peterson as Basilio; John Marlowe Nielson as Don Curzio; Reed Hansen as Bartolo; Keith M. Engar as Antonio; An-tonio; and Joah Newmark as Bar-barina. Bar-barina. The production will be the result re-sult of combined talents of the Utah Symphony, the University Theatre and the U Department of Music. The trio who have made history with the U Summer Festivals Festi-vals in recent years will pool efforts for the production. Maestro Maurice Abravanel will be director; direc-tor; staging will be by Dr. C. Lowell Lees and William Christen-sen Christen-sen will handle choreography. Assisting the directors will be Vern Adix who will design the sets; Sereta Jones who will su pervise costuming; Dr. Robert M. Cundick and Carl Fuerstner who will assist in coaching the principals princi-pals and John Marlowe Nielson who is training the chorus. Chorus members for "Figaro" include Martha Ann Fisher Grace Ann Brown, JoAnn Brewer, Joy Thalman Nancy Kent, Norma Jean Basinger, Marge Riches, Karen Wood, Susie Mitchell, Rich- ard Hanson, Terry Green, Gordon Bigler, Donald Western, Richard Dyer, Philip Moody, LaVern Mer-ritt, Mer-ritt, Howard Olpin and Ronald Musig. Taking dancing roles in the opera will be Judy Anderson, Judy Nelson, Sharon Givan, Nancy Gold, Mike Smuin, Kent Stowell, Gary Horton and Finis Jaung. The opera will climax the four-event four-event Cycle presented by the Utah Symphony in cooperation with the University. The Cycle is being |
