Show Highland Bright With Light Amid cheers, a rousing band concert con-cert and some mighty fine public speaking, the new "white way" was turned on in Sugar House Monday night by its queen, Miss Marianne Parlos. City Street Commissioner L. C. Romney presided at the ceremony; and Mayor Earl J. Glade was the main speaker, promising that Highland Drive, was on the city's agenda as being made into one of the finest, prettiest streets in all Salt Lake Valley. He told of the great tree removal program on Highland Drive, of its new illumination, featuring brilliant bril-liant mercury vapor lamps and of plans to beautify the thoroughfare next season. L. L. Halversen, president of the Sugar House chamber of commerce, com-merce, greeted Utah Power and Light company officials, who were on hand to view the achievement, signally marked by the turning on of the lights. Among the power officials presented pre-sented were: J. E. Cushman, assistant to the president; J. C. Littlefield, division divi-sion manager; A. F. Rose, street lighting consultant; W. E. Fellows, general line foreman, and Frank Lincoln, forman in charge of the Highland Drive project. The Utah Power firm workmen did a yeoman's job in getting the lights ready for the turning-on ceremonies. They worked right up to the last minute installing the ceremonial switch and making certain their project was perfect. The gaudy lights lend a friendly friend-ly atmosphere to the shoppers who are turning out in droves for the nightopenings of the merchants, who are cooperating by decorating their shop windows and doors and their interior displays in keeping with the yule season. |
