Show Puccini Opera Madam Butterfly Opens July 11th "Madame Butterfly," Puccini's immortal opera of a faithful Japanese Jap-anese girl and an American naval officer, will open in the University of Utah Stadium Bowl Wednesday (July 11) at 8:30 p.m. Performances will continue on Friday and Saturday. Production director will be Dr. C. Lowell Lees, with Maurice Ab-ravanel, Ab-ravanel, director of the Utah Symphony, Sym-phony, as musical director. Elaine Malbin, dark-haired star of the New York City Center Opera, will sing the title role as Cho-Cho-san. Miss Malbin recently re-cently soared to the top of the nation-wide television ladder with triumphs in "Madame Butterfly," "The Trial at Rouen," "Salome" and other operatic roles. Thomas Hayward, longtime star of the Metropolitan Opera Co., radio and television, will portray Lt. Pinkerton, with Conchita Gaston, Gas-ton, Manila-born mezzo-soprano, as Suzuki, the maid. Supporting roles will be sung by O. Dale Blackburn, Marvin A. Sorensen, L. Reed Hansen, Brett F. Paulsen, George W. Whitaker, Glade Peterson and Jean Preston. |
