Show Sugar Houo C. of C. Box 73 Sh SEE -SAW i Well, sir, someone ought to be held in criminal contempt of the public for letting Highland Drive and other Salt Lake streets get in the potted condition they are. Untold damage has been done the street because the holes have been allowed to enlarge, with un-drained un-drained water seeping ever deeper and broader beneath the remaining remain-ing surface if it could be called a surface. And even greater damage has been wraught against automobiles, trucks and vehicles that must use these busy thoroughfares. New cars have been made old; old cars have been made into virtual wrecks; tires have exploded, explod-ed, been worn to a frazzle inside where their plies have broken through; tubes have been shaved thin to a point of being unsafe. Wheels have been thrown out of alignment; springs have been pushed to their breaking point; steering gears have taken a beating beat-ing that would make a test ground grueling seem child's play. Indeed, the whole thing is a sorry mess. Someone should be held to account. ac-count. Someone in officialdom should be sued and someone, not the taxpayer, should be made to pay and pay dearly. Pity, too, the poor businessman whose bad luck it is to be situated on Highland Drive, for example. Auto traffic is down 50 per cent or more, and so's his business. He should have some recourse to law to force fixture of the street or retribution damage in dollars for his commercial losses. No matter what the cost or what the method, these desperately pocked streets should be made whole and smooth again, but quick. Excuse after excuse and maybe a few reasons, too, will be tossed to the public. But somewhere there should be a civil answer to the problem, and an accounting made of either the lack of good engineering judgment judg-ment and political foresight or the outright incompetence of those who were or are in office for letting let-ting such a plight exist, And it's getting worse. Not better If it requires a new law to fix up this mess, then such a one should be forthcoming without a single day's hesitation. |
