Show AROUND THE CORNER IN SUGAR HOUSE By D. JAMES CANNON 1 M ' 1 WE GOT A BANG out of one article in particular which was headed, "Southeast "South-east Termed Wonderland by Newcomer." The writer concluded his "story with these words: ". . .of all the districts of the city, the southeastern section has grown the fastest, the stores are doing the best business and the section is made up of optimists, for no pessimists are tolerated, for even they soon get the spirit, that so rapidly overcame over-came the 'newcomer' who at once became a 'go-getter and booster' for the southeast." south-east." . AFTER PERUSING a 29-year 29-year old copy of the original Sugar House Times t'other day, we can easily see why our good friend, Mayor Earl J. Glade, is unopposed in the current election. elec-tion. The reason is as the yellowed pages of the Times will testify Earl Glade is a "Go-Getter." That, significantly, is the name of a club that he founded in 1922 to make Sugar House go places. HEADLINES of that early issue show that Sugar House was really going places almost 30 years ago. If Mr. Glade had stayed here to bulid up his "Go-Getter" "Go-Getter" idea, maybe this community would be even greater than 'it is. Anyway, here are two of the enthusiastic enthus-iastic headlines : SOUTHEAST STARTS "DISTINCTIVE CITY" MOVE GO-GETTER CLUB PREPARES FOR ACTIVITY ACTIV-ITY STAFF OF THE TIMES was listed this way : "Earl Jay Glade, Editor; Edw. J. McCal-lum, McCal-lum, Gen. Mgr.; Harold Jenson. Assistant Editor." The issue we have had 10 pages, 8 columns, with 20 inches depth to each column. It was loaded with advertising ad-vertising as well as news, and throughout it had an air of progressivene'ss. |
