Show E. Al!en Bateman Announces Candidacy for Education Post Dr. E. Allen Bateman, Sugar House resident, announced Thursday Thurs-day that he will be a candidate for election on the Democratic ticket to serve a second term as State Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Utah. ' Dr. Bateman will stand upon his record as state superintendent superintend-ent during the past three-year period. One of the objectives of the state department of education educa-tion during this time has been to develop a wide participation of teachers, school administrators, administra-tors, members of boards of education, ed-ucation, and representatives of the public in the formulation of a school program. Periodic Conferences of School Officials Superintendents of schools have met in conferences three times each year; representative committees have completed, or are now working on, new courses of study and revised certification requirements for all professional school personnel. person-nel. A large representative committee of Utah citizens worked for nearly a year, beginning begin-ning in June, 1946, to determine what the aims and purposes of the public schools of Utah should be. The report of this Committee was issued in the summer nf 1947. During the past three years the state department of education educa-tion has been responsible for developing an expanded vocational voca-tional education program in Utah and has been the State approving agency for on-the-job training, programs for veterans. vet-erans. Major School Building Programs Dr. Bateman predicts that during the next few years there will be a major school building program in the school districts of Utah made necessary by the increased school population brought into Utah by war industries, in-dustries, and also because of an increased birth rate in Utah since 1942. The state department depart-ment is acting in an advisory capacity to assist school districts dis-tricts in wise educational planning plan-ning for this extensive building expansion. Superintendent Bateman was born in Salt Lake County, re ceived his education at joraan High School, the University of Utah, University of Chicago, and' Columbia University. He has been a teacher in several Utah school districts. He served as principal of Murray High School and as superintendent of schools in Murray, and in Logan. Lo-gan.
