Show Why Allegany PJever Esc carta Gircul City ALLEGANY. N. Y. Allegany (1940 pop., 1,436) was planned as Allegany City, "the intellectual, cultural, cul-tural, industrial and mercantile hub of the East." But through freak accidents its dream was never j realized. j The proposed city had boon c- j pleted and surveyed on paper and : the company started to bui;d a i...-latial i...-latial hotel (the Park hotel recently dismantled) according to plans. Work was interrupted on the Erie for a short time and when it was resumed in 1848, a new survey located lo-cated the route a half mile north of the "paper" city. Because of this and also because of the fact that the Genesee valley canal terminated termi-nated at Millgrove instead of Otean, the project was forced to be abandoned. aban-doned. Thus Allegany never became the hub of "communication, transportation transporta-tion and industry" for the East. But it nearly became a reality. |
