Show Sports Specialties . by "Pete" . With passing of this long, ideal summer and your last prewar pre-war golf balls becoming more like pieces of hacked-up meat and the tennis rackets getting so weak that they wave to the good looking player on ths next court, let us turn to the 1 forthcoming winter outdoor sport kinown as skiing. Skiing is termed dangerous by people who have eiether had a one-time try with inadequate equipment, or have seen a few falls from skiiers who have come over Ecker Hill on their backs. Of the latter I dare say they were always up and walking over in the in run minus one ski or even both but not injured to any degree other than pride. Equipment is becoming so scientifically sci-entifically made that at th present rate of improvement pretty soon one will only have to speak to his skis and they will react to his wishes. Skis that heretofore were heavy, stiff, and ill-proportioned are now being made light, flexible and streamlined stream-lined so that with little effort they hang on hard packed snow, plane in deep powder, and take bumps like the back seat of a Rolls Royce. Bindings are now made that will release the feet from the skis with any sharp twist or hard spill such as an "egg beater," "nose dive" or a "three-point landing." Boots are still hard ot get and the present stock in the better bet-ter class will have to be imported import-ed from Europe or from Argentine Argen-tine hides. Why? Ask the OPA. Clothing, too, will be scarce and only available in small shipments. Mayor Watson dropped in today and stated that we will have snow on the third of October . . . We. asked him the hour. He stated it will begin to come aronnd 4 p.m. I was told by the lift crew now working on the lift that a large black bear was looking for a tunnel to crawl into and sleep this hard winter off, so don't get too ambitious on the higher slopes and wake him up. . Getting back to your present present equipment if you are lucky enough so that you don't have to buy much this fall, you should inspect your entire' outfit. out-fit. Edges should be checked, such as lost or broken screws, waterproofing both skis and boots, dried soles on boots should be loosened up and anything any-thing else that you can see. If you don't know what to do consult con-sult a ski specialist. Good equipment equip-ment is hard to get so take care of what you have. Just a note on archery, after laying off for some time. The roving contest held in Emigration Emigra-tion canyon last month was more fun than all the golf that I have played all summer, or should I say attempted. There was no wait at the tees and no one to speak of out in the rough. The only after effects were the same as the first day of chest-pull chest-pull exerciser. Good skiing means: Plenty of snow, the right kind of equipment, properly fitted and assembled, and just a little nerve to get out. |
