Show O The New Street Signs RICHARD R. LYMAN, Consulting Civil Engineer. I have been so promptly and so courteously treated by those in Sugar House with whom I have had the good fortune of dealing that I am greatly pleased to have been invited to write a few paragraphs for The Bulletin. Commissioner John B. Mathe-son Mathe-son was wise and right when he concluded that Street Numbers are mostly needed in the southeastern south-eastern part of the city where the names of streets are so many and the numbers of the streets, in the beginning,- were so few. I understand that he has ordered and will soon have in place these fine new modern street signs, which have on them both the names and1 the O numbers of the streets, at all the street intersections east of State Street, south of Ninth South and north of Twenty-first Twenty-first South Street, clear up to the foothills. Using the Street Numbers Imagine how much time and effort will be saved if the people peo-ple living in this large area will put their addresses in the telephone tele-phone directory using their street numbers instead their street names as many are already al-ready doing. Examples: "Hayes Claude E 759 East 2855 South St." ''King David S 2782 South 2475 East St." These numbers tell as definitely def-initely where a street is located in a city as the numbers on the houses tell where the houses are located on a street. This system of street numbering can be applied in any city. Imagine the time that would be saved for ail mankind if any traveler could find any address in any city "without a map or other help." People do not need street signs in order to find their own homes. It is the stranger in a city who needs help. Supt. A. E. Palmer, of the Experiment Station, Sta-tion, Canada Department of Agriculture, wrote to me: "As Oone who visits your city oc- casionally I would greatly appreciate ap-preciate being able to find addresses. ad-dresses. I searched nearly an hour to find Kensington Aye." Friends and acquaintances and strangers who may be looking look-ing for your home go at once to the telephone directory. If you will give your address with the street number", as those named above have done, then anyone can find your address "without a map or other help." And now that the new street signs are practically all in place in Sugar House, addresses can be found by observing the street numbers on the street signs thus avoiding the danger of traveling slowly along a street trying to see the numbers num-bers on the houses. Suggestion to The Bulletin In a recent issue of this excellent ex-cellent paper I observed a number num-ber of street addresses. Some of these I will give below and afeer each, and underlined, I will give what I suggest The Bulletin Bulle-tin print after all the addresses in the paper. And it will be of keen interest to me to have tnose who see this suggestion of mine let the paper publishers know how they like it: 1233 East Parkway, 2400 South St. 1977 Douglas, 1240 East St. 1053 Logan Ave., 1(25 South St. 1133 Garfield Ave., 184.- South St. 2133 Berkeley, 2235 East St. 4858 Memory Lane, 1990 East St. 2165 Bryan Ave. 1565 South St. 1120 Wilson Ave., 1745 South St. 1157 Wilmington Ave., 2205 South St. 916 Hollywood Ave., 1980 South St. And I suggest further that the people observe, as few seem to have done already, the numbers num-bers which belong to their respective streets and use them. So doing will be an excellent informative undertaking. |
