Show First Paper Appeared in July In July of 1621 book sellers in London began vending letter size sheets of paper upon which news from the continent was printed in detail. Known as "corontos," these publications were the forerunners of the modern newspapers. Earliest known example of a coronto is one in the British Museum Mu-seum published by Nicholas Bourne on Sept. 24, 1621, but there is every evidence that Thomas Archer, a well-known printer, issued the first corontos in July. Mostly they were copies of similar publications printed on the continent. They consisted of a single sheet printed on only one side. Technically speaking, they were not newspapers because they appeared at only irregular intervals. |
