Show Community Service Release 177. Drastic steps are being taken by the Office of Price Admin-stration Admin-stration and the War Production Board to bring about the return of low priced clothing to the merchants mer-chants shelves. During the last eighteen months clothing prices have increased more than eleven per cent, only the 4.5 per cent reduction in food prices kept living costs fmro rising ris-ing to dangerous levels. Shifting by manufacturers to high price limitation resulted in sales of women's dresses, for example, changing from seventy per cent of them selling for $7.95 or less in 1943 to seventy per cent now selling sell-ing above that price. The Bank-head Bank-head amendment has cost clothing cloth-ing shoppers approximately $100-000,000 $100-000,000 in increased prices for cotton goods .according to recent figures. Steps laid down by the two agencies include controls to see that prices rises be absorbed by wholesalers and retailers and not passed on to the customer; textiles tex-tiles will be channeled into more essential and lower priced types of apparel within the limits of supply; manufacturers will produce pro-duce in the same average price |
