Show Five Southeast Twirlers' Enter Letter Carriers' Contest Five pert and pretty south east maids have served notice that they are out to win the coveted title of majorette and oi leading Salt Lake Letter Carriers' Car-riers' band when it marches in Miami, Fla., this Oct. 11-16, at the national convention of Letter Let-ter Carriers. Contest Chairman Contest is under the direction of N. Merrell Valentine, 928 Bryan Ave., band manager who for the past 12 years has managed man-aged the colorful aggregation. Mr. Valentine stated that entrance en-trance qualifications for the girls, in addition to, their being be-ing qualified majorettes, include their selling a number of tickets to an automobile raffle sponsored sponsor-ed by the group to help finance the band. He estimated that 25 or 30 girls would enter the contest. con-test. The contest will be held on the midway at the State Fan-grounds Fan-grounds August 6. At that time the winning majorette will be named; also second and third place winners who will serve as alternates. Expenses will be paid for the winning girl and an adult companion to accom-, pay her, Mr. Valentine pointed out. 5 Local Entrants Local entrants, Virginia Grubb, Barbara Butkus, Mari-. Mari-. lyn Mills, Elvera Dell and Jean King are experienced "twirlers," , having performed on numerous occasions in local and state parades. pa-rades. Miss King, 16, was drum majorette for the Olympus Junior Jun-ior High band for two years. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. T. King, 4007 Highland Drive, Holladay. The four other girls are members of Post 65's widely known drum and bugle corps. 9 Years' Experience Veteran member of the group is 17-year-old Virginia Grubb who has been twirling batons for nine years. She is the daughter daugh-ter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Grubb, 1137 Kensington Ave. South High coed, Elvera Dell, 16, has been at it three years. Marilyn Mills is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Styles C. Mills and has been active in Post 65's drum and bugle corps for several sev-eral years. Miss Butkus has also had several years' experience. Sugar House post office carrier. car-rier. The Utah band has always been an outstanding unit at conventions con-ventions which are held every two years. They were the first to j introduce majorettes to postal j bands. Since then, most bands I are accompanied to conventions bv girl twirlers. This year the city of Miami has invited them to "put on a program and has dedicated "Utah Night" to them. Scenic movies will be featured, furnished by the state department depart-ment of publicity and the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Letter carrier, Al Morton, will show his films of the Colorado River. |
