Show ON RECORDS By Neal Hart An album of interest to music lovers who saw "The Jolson Story" is Decea's latest set which includes the songs he made famous: "Sonny Boy," "California Here I Come," "April Showers," "Swanee," and "Anniversary "An-niversary Song," which is leading lead-ing the current best sellers. We attribute the return in popularity popu-larity of this great trouper, not only to the great Hollywood picture and the near perfect role of Larry Parks, as Jolson, but to the quality of Al Jolson's voice Itself. Notwithstanding the Sinatras and the Russells we O place Al Jolson next to the "Great Groaner" himself. victor has re-issued two album's al-bum's of "Swing Classics" which should interest jazz fans. They are Glen Miller's "Memorial "Memor-ial Album" (P-148) with such hits as "Moonlight Serenade," "Little Brown Jug," "In the Mood" and Tommy Dorsey's "AH Time Hits" album (P-163) with "Opus No. 1," Chicago," "Boogie Woogie." The never ending demand for these numbers num-bers attribute to their "solid-ness." "solid-ness." As a newcomer to the select few "Top Bands" Stan Kenton Oand , orchestra is destined, in our opinion, to make music history. Evidence of this is to be found in his new album for Capitol "Artistry in Rhythm." (BD 39.) We feel that Kenton has set a new style in modern swing. His sax section is to be especially lauded. For evidence of the haunting effect of Kenton's Ken-ton's sax section hear "Opus in Pastels." (Ca20088.) For a quick look at the popular pop-ular records which we think , will hit the top, our choice goes . to a tune taken from Toselli's serenade, "Years and Years Ago." Recorded by such greats as the Dinning Sisters, Dick Haymes, Jack Leonard, and Herbie Fields, we predict a solid future for this number. Ieep your eye on "Connecticut," -an-other nice number recorded by Bing and Judy Garland, H'jrbie Fields, Martha Tilton and The Modernaires. In the classical field we recommend rec-ommend Fritz Kreisler playing the new "Greunberg Concerto" for violin and orchestra. Written Writ-ten upon commission from Kreisler, this work gets away from any feeling of key or key changes. Tri this modern and highly imaginative work Kreisler Kreis-ler is at his very best. |
