Arrangements have already been made with Dr. Avard Fairbanks to erect this Memorial in the State Park. This is only one of many fine projects that will be developed. for the Pioneer Memorial State Park At the Sugar House Prison Site Sponsored by the Sugar House Chamber of Commerce, which has already a fund of several thousand dollars towards such a building, this tourist center will be located on the crossroads in the Center of Scenic America, right on the Lincoln Highway. More than one thousand tourist cars a day now pass this unequaled site for such a building. Let us consider these tourist facts: Motoring tourists traveled 346,740,000 miles, or 25.4 per cent, of the 1948 passenger car mileage in Utah. They purchased 20,000,000 gallons of gasoline, or 16.9 per cent, of ALL the State passenger car consumption. They brought the State $800,000 in gasoline taxi They spent $50,000,000 for food, lodging, automobile, and other expenses. Each car averaged 2.8 persons, stayed 2.6 days and 2.2 nights, and spent $174.49. Each person spent $24 a day while in Utah! (The above is Tourist data from 1948 research, Utah Tourist Study, Utah State Road Commission, 1950. But we have only started to realize the great wealth from tourist trade. Salt Lake City is visited by more than a million tourists a year, but a very small percentage of these visit olher parts of the state. This building, with other things planned would undoubt-edly undoubt-edly increase our tourist wealth millions of dollars a year. In comparison, Utah's estimated tourist revenue last year was $75,000,000. while Colorado, Colo-rado, wilh far less scenic attractions, had a tourist income of more than $300,000,000, which is only one example of our lack of development. In this proposed Scenic Wonders Building, a tourist would see the many wonderful things to visit in the State, and as he viewed them he could touch a button underneath any of the displays and a neon light would show him on the great relief map of Utah on the back wall, just where it was located and how to get there. Further explanation and guide service would be offered, and instead of treating the tourist as a stranger in our ates we would render him a real service and sell him on the many wonderful just an overnight stop in the city. Jus think of what this development and other things planned on the Pioneer Memorial State Park would mean to all of us here in the State, where state-wide organizations would make the tourist trade our greatest industry! We compliment the Sons of Utah Pioneers on the observance of their "Know Your Utah Project" and their establishing of a temporary museum, which also will be moved! to this fine location just as soon as the penitentiary is moved.
