Show S. H. Parents Seek Scliool Board Action In a general meeting held Monday Mon-day evening August 18, nearly 80 southeastern parents gathered at Weasku Inn to air their complaints before City School superintendant, Dr. M. Lynn Bennion, and school board member Horace B. Richards. Chief causes of the complaints were the problems incurred by lack of school facilities: children having to be transported by buses to schools far from home; the younger children of the Kindergarten, Kinder-garten, first and second grades no longer being allowed to attend school at the LDS Parleys ward chapel at 21st So. and 21st E.; the rigor of bus travel on some of the children. Parents of the Parleys ward section sec-tion voluntarily organized themselves them-selves to meet and present their case before the school board. Mrs. Ethel Scherer, 2275 Hollywood Ave was instrumental in calling the parents together. George B. Cat-mull, Cat-mull, contractor and the father of three youngsters of grade school age, acted as chairman of the meeting. The meeting was open for free discussion and questions. Dr. Bennion Ben-nion gave parents little encouragement encourage-ment on the possibilities of immediate imme-diate action on their complaints. He said that their children would have to ride the buses "a little longer." As to the building of a new school for the southeast, he stated that, "The new school in this section is the first on our building agenda." However, because a new building would cost half a million dollars, he explained, it is impossible impos-sible at this time to build. He added further that under present conditions it would take a year or two to 'finance the new building. build-ing. Dr. Bennion reiterated the board's commitment of a consolidated consoli-dated building policy. Upon learning that their children child-ren must ride the buses, the parents par-ents have set about to better conditions con-ditions of transportation. A Mothers' committee is being, organized or-ganized to see to it that the children child-ren wait for the bus in an orderly fashion and that riding conditions are improved. According to Mrs. Scherer, it is even possible that mothers will take turns riding the bus to and from the schools. A parents' committee meeting has been called for 1 p.m. Monday Mon-day at Parleys ward to organize . the supervision of the school buses. |
