Show Indians Are Moving to White Areas More Rapidly BERKELEY, CALIF. California Indians have mixed and merged with white Americans since the days of the gold rush. Many ot the Indians, In-dians, particularly young women, -moved away from their ancestral tribes and resettled in areas of dense population. - Prof. S. E. Cook, physiologist of the University of California, presented pre-sented the findings of a recent study of Indian population statistics in a ' technical journal, Human Biology. He pointed out that the majority of California Indian tribes never were sent to reservations, but were left to merge as best they might. Now more than one in eight has moved to predominantly white areas. The rate was accelerated in recent years because of the depression depres-sion of the 1930s and the stimulus of war employment. Cook found that few Indians marry mar-ry outside their own people. However, How-ever, many Indian women marry men of other races and move to centers of agriculture and industry. |
