The 7th Ward Mutual of Olympus Stake took the Mia Maids to Lagoon, August 26th and swimming fun was enjoyed by all. The Holladay 7th Ward Bee-hive girls softball team re-ceived the Sportsmanship trophy. The 7th Ward is very proud of their girls. ' The Holladay 5th Ward Mutual went to Sunset Beach to swim and bask in the sun. Plenty of hotdogs and water-melon were on hand and all who went had an enjoyable time. Bride - Elect Feted At Tea Miss Barbara Nelson, 15S3 South 4 th East, was honored at a trousseau tea Saturday, hosted by her mother, Mrs. Bard Nelson. The bride-elec- t wore a green and yellow printed chiffon afternoon dress, styled with a scoop neckline, matching cum-bcrbun- d at the waist of the full skirt and cap sleeves. A white carnation corsage and white shoes completed her ensemble. , Grapes on a china pedesttal dish centered the buffet re-freshment table. Among the guests were Mrs. Blaine Carruth, Mary Jean Carruth, Miss Guilda Whitaker, Mrs. Jean Ilersher, Miss Carol Carruth, Miss Susan Ilersher, Mrs. William Holland, Miss Joanne Abernathy, and Mrs. Edna Edwards. Miss Nelson will be married to De Royce Campbell Sept. 12, in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple. Miss Sally Meyer Entered In Contest A local Beauty has entered the nationwide contest to mime "Miss National Contact Lens". She is Mis3 Sally Meyer of 1193 Hugo Avenue who placed her bid to capture the 1958 title of .'uoen. A panol of judges, which will select the three most beautiful women wearing contact lenses in the nation, includes Lilly Dache and comedian Sam Levenron. Coronation will take place in November (National Contact Lens Month) during the 3rd National Contact Lens Congress which meets in New York City, Chicago and San Franc-isco. Each of the three winners will attend one of these congress cities where she will be feted at special banquet festivities. Dr. Elair B. Ericson, Optomet-rist, in Sugar House, a contact lens specialist, submitted Miss Meyer's photograph in the con-test which is sponsored annually by the Plastic Con-tact Lens Company of Chicago, in connection with the annual national congresses. A survey shows that 67',; of all contact lens wearers are women and of that number 60 are between the ages of 15 and 30. This survey indicated that vanity, a woman's very special characteristic, is a primary factor in her choosing contact lenses. That evening an open house was held for them at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Jensen, 2051 East 4365 South. The parents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. George James Burden, 443 East Robert Ave. The bride wore a white, ballerina-lengt- h dress with a full skirt of chiffon. Her shoulder-lengt- h veil was att-ached to a floral headpiece. She carried white gladioli. After honeymooning1 at Yellowstone National Park the couple is now making their home in Salt Lake. Vacation Miss Virginia Baker, sec-retary to the secretary of the Sugar House Chambber of Com-merce, arrived home from an enjoyable vacation on the west coast. She visited in San Fran-cicsc- o and Los Angeles. Church. Dr. Peter Bercovitz was the final guest preacher for the Holladay Community Church summer program on August 31st in the absence of Rev. Cowles, who is on vacation, according to Mildred D. Duboi, publicity director. New Minister Added To Holladay Church Holladay Community Church will welcome the addition of the Rev. John Thornton to its staff as minister of education, Sept. 8. He is a native of Elgin, Illinois, where he received his early education. He was graduated from the University of Indiana in 1953 and received membership in Thi Beta Kappa, national honorary scholastic fraternity, for his outstanding-- work in scholarship. He received a Dan-fort- h Scholarship to the Yale Divinity School where he con-tinued his ttheological studies. For the past two years he has served as "COWBOY"" pastor at the Congregational Churches in Tindale and Big Piny, Wyoming, traveling from place to place in the vast coun-try of Wyoming on horseback. He also served as director of the Church Vocational Confer-ence for the young people of the intermountain area for two summers. Rev. Thornton and Mr. Robert Jones, church school superinten-dent, have recently returned from Purdue University, Lafay-ette, Indiana, where they att-ended the conference on christ-ian educaton sponsored by the United Church of Christ, Aug. 19-2- 2. With his excellent qual-ifications and valuable experi-ence, Rev. Thornton will greatly strengthen the staff at the Holladay Community |
