September 19. 1957 INDEPENDENT - USU Makes Plan For Centennial The appointment this week at Utah State University of Dr. Carl ton Culmsee, dean of university! college, as general chairman of! the university's diamond jubilee and Land Grand act centinnial.j signaled the start of five years; of intensive planning for the ma-- j jor event. First part of the two-side- d cele bration at Utah State is intended to commemorate the signing in 1862 by President Abraham Lin--( coin of the Morrill Act creating the Land Grant system of coll-eges and universities. The second part of the affair, all to fall within the academic year 1962-6- 3 will be the seventy-fift- h birthday of. Utah's Land Grant University by act of the! territorial legislature. j "During the short span of years; between now and the celebration, the university, under Dr. Culm-see- 's general direction, will look for improved ways of preparing young people for leadership in ma-ny general and skilled areas which will challenge this and coming generations," said Dr. Chase in announcing the plans for the com-memorations. Leaders in many fields will be invited to the university to discuss and advise on major public is-sues of the day as they relate to Utah and its land grant uni-versity. "We will use the commemora-tion as a vehicle on which to meet challenges the remaining quarter century and others to come," the USU president said. In his capacity of general chairman of the combined dele-gation, Dr. Culmsee will serve as head of ail major undertakings of the university during the period including the annual Agriculture and Industry conference in Salt Lake City in 1963, Dr. Chase not-ed. Special attention will be given this annual meeting, the president said, as a time for application of ;Utah human and other resources to the great creative era which will lie ahead. The president said it was anti-cipated the university will pub-lish a series of pamphlets and brochures on results on research and other studies dealing with the resources of Utah as a storehouse of power and riches. The mass media, community discussion programs and other de-vices available will be employed to focus mental and material att-ention on USU and the state, he added.
