addition was nade by the purchase of lands 1 in he hill creek country half from indian tribal funds and half from rovern government ment funds in addition to hiis is there are approximately acres of scattered coded ceded lands ands thi throughout hout the old uintah reservation eser area since june 1937 have been under the die admin adain of tile the indian service the general administration work arh if the indian agency at fort du esne has been materially in c eased during the last year by the addition of five reservations to the uintah and ouray jurisdiction these ad additions cons consist st of ta the e following shivwits Shiv wits reservation near st george utah kaibab reservation near freedonia arizona kanosh reservation near fillmore utah koosharem Koo Koos sharem harein reservation near richfield utah and reservation west of milford utah thus all of the indian reservations in the state slate except a small part of the navajo in the southeast corner and a small unit in th northwest pat pa t known as the go shute reservation are now under the fort duchesne Duches nc office period of improvement the last two years has ocen den a period of improvement on the reservation er in many direction sAmong the most significant of those these 13 is the increase of feed on the indian grazing reserve during the present year in spite of a protracted drought the reserve I 1 furnished urnis hed aban abundant d an I 1 and sufficient grazing for al all I 1 t the he stock permitted demitted on oil th the range up until tile the close of the grazing season with a carry carryover over ver adequate to prevent damage to th taj range even in case another dry year immediately follows tins this was in made ade possible in several ways first by determining the carrying capacity of the range through a study by trained men second d by stocking the range approximately to this capacity and third clr rd by distributing the stock over the entire area in proportion to the amount of food feed available the latter item was made possible through the groat great improvement program of 0 to tho indian C C C water development water development has been undertaken on parts of the range ranee where no water existed thus making it possible to utilize the feed on the dry parts of the range as well as on oi the parts where here water existed over one hundred springs have been developed on the range during the last few years as well as a number of stock water reservoirs ervo irs six of the larger ones have been constructed during the last two years in addition to this 25 miles of boundary and drift fences and ten cattle guards have been built one oil e small stock I 1 and two licad heavy y load truck bridges have been built acoss ac oss reek rcck creek and a new bridge is now under construction across white river near ouray this will replace the now practically worn out bus suspension pension bridge which is very dangerous to cross with a heavy load twenty five miles of truck trails have been built in different parts of the reservation and over miles of truck trails are maintained each year several new picnic grounds have been prepared in the uintah mountains on the indian reserve and one amusement park has been completed at the whiterocks school soil erosion control several projects on so erosion control have also been under way hundreds of small check dams have been built and many other structures to prevent soil erosion from to 1000 acres of land on the indian reservation have been re vegetated by means of using a seed mixture on contour furrows it is planned that the new stand of feed growing on the furrows win will reseed re seed the entire area with favorable water conditions in the course of a year 0 two more of this range re vege tation work is now in progress the C C C organization has aa also constructed two new sets of quarters at ft duchesne during the last two years there are em cm aloyed in this organization from pounds PO ands of wool was sold and some bushels of grain raised under the direction of the exi tension service there were 40 new buildings constructed on the indian farms during the last year and aind approximately the same number during th the e preceding year in the home extension work a very interesting broj project act has developed in the use of earth colors by the indian boys and girls in their paintings and othar artistic productions this project is creating considerable interest throughout 11 the entire country the indian indian women have also been active during the last year at the various community canning centers for example 2000 quarts of vegetables were canned quarts 0 of f fruit and pounds of in meat e at was processed this year HEALTH department the new 24 bed hospital with the nearby nurses and doctors quarters provides a modern up to date plant for the health activities on the indian reservation the th indians fire are given first class medical service an and d treatment for all types of illness and accident but the chief objective of the health service is to c carry arry on health education and preventive medicine in I 1 the field of personal tiers onal and community hygiene and sanitation an extensive tuberculosis and social disease e survey is now beng conducted the latter in cooDe come ration with the state public health service many improvements have been made at the new hospital site during the last year in the way of planting trees and landscaping a new lawn irrigation system etc ROADS department the roads department of the tha reservation I 1 er has during the last two years constructed ampro approximately xa I 1 15 miles of new roads bringing them to a modern modem graveled sur f face ace in addition to this they ia lave cooperated with the count in the completion of seven and one halt half additional miles of road bu 1 to the sas same ne standards and have coopt cooperated rated with the state in ia the construction of a oridge andge over dry gulch duang ach winter the roads d apartment ot jt the reservation maintains approximately miles of road such maintenance consisting of snow removal and ordinary repair work necessary to making the roads passable throughout the uintah basin during the last as t two years the indian roads division has furnished employment to from 15 to 50 W P A workers through a sponsorship arrangement wita the W P A PLANT improvement there is just being completed at fort duchesne a nw n w employees building this building is modern throughout and consists of binl separate rooms wh ch will wil provid quarters for single employees at the agency the power system at fort buchl duchesne ane is also now b ing reconstructed this improvement will provide an entirely new set of poles lamp posts new atme lights and a new power system for the agency grounds gounds it wil also balso combine the telephone ane anc power systems in so far as th distribution lines are concerned this is a much beaded improve c ment since the old system was be coming dangerous and w was as very ver inefficient in providing modern electric service to the fort build ings several sets of new quarte s ar planned and a six year has been outlined at the fo fort rl which will entirely replace the old war department building that are in such a bad state of re pair irrigation department during the last two yea years rs th irrigation division of the indian service has been fortunate in obtaining sufficient fur funds ids to makl some much needed improvements throughout the entire uintah irrigation project more than new irrigation structures have been installed replacing old wood en ones which in some cases case i were more than 30 years old A least east three of these new structures consist of large concrete head works at the diversion point of some of the main canals these diversion works were designed in the he san francsco franc office and embody the most modern engineering technique they are now permanent structures in so far as it is possible to make such construction work penn permanent anent in addition to this there have icon hundreds of miles of canals cleaned and many improvements in the general grade and flow of the ditches have been made A survey has been completed by especially authorized men during the past wo iwo years and recommendation indge concerning the economic conditions and ane quality of the tana and together with ane water supply and the accumulated irrigation charges against the water aaers on the tha uintah project it is expected that this wu result in ce certain tain legislation and orders from washington anich will greatly improve the cc nomi status of tie te indian irrigation project PROVIDED the indian reservation in the uintah basin furnis furnishes hz s a great source of employment for the indians as well as for many others during the month of october there were persons employed by the uintah and ouray ag ney ncy the payroll for this particular month amounted to approximately out of this total number employed there were 79 white people and indians this is one of the ugliest months of employment by the agency in many years |
