silver hair and bright eyes of mary alary orser lend dignity to any occasion and for many years her hei influence has been felt on both young and old in eastern utah perhaps there is no person in in this section who has succeeded in molding and building character and good lives so well as mrs airs orser having taught school for 33 years in various towns in utah and idaho sirs mrs orser has come in contact with thousands of young people and wherever she goes to salt lake provo logan she is greeted by her former students who all recall her influence for good on them or by their parents who remember the help mrs orser gave their youngsters mrs arsers active busy life has led her from one achievement to another and along the way sh has met a world of people chos faces she never forgets one of the best informed persons on all subjects mrs airs orser is an excellent public sp speaker eaker and her knowledge and charm have added greatly to church civic and social meetings during the many years she has made her home here her activities are broad not confined to any one circle but extending to social political religious and civic fields perhaps it is her wide and varied interests hei contacts with all types of people and things that have wrought in her a universality which makes her life so influential on others mrs airs orser came to eastern utah in 1891 settling first in ashley valley in 1907 the carml family moved to Roc roosevelt sevelt and during the years she has lived here mrs orser lias has served on the roosevelt stake relief society and al I 1 A boards she helped organize the altrus club and because of her deep literary appreciation has been a potent force in book circles she has served as presidee pres idem deni of the daughters of pioneers arid and has long been an honorary member of the business and professional club she has had a hand in most of the important community affairs for over thirty years time has failed to slow down this remarkable w woman oman w who h is still active in church club and civic affairs who still contributes her dignity knowledge and influence to comm life I 1 alma anderson just a kind sweet old lady is alma anderson but to the people who work with her and know her well she is an indefatigable worker who quietly and modestly has helped many people in times ol of sickness and need and done great good in her community so unobtrusively tru does she go about her work that only the people who know her well are aware of her greatness it takes every kind of people to make up a world the energetic ambitious ones who make the wheels of the world turn and the kindly quiet people who take care of those left behind or hurt in the mad rush forward mrs anderson is one of the latter and like most of the people who really serve mankind best she wants no praise or glory she shuns the public ey eye and prefers to go about administering her kindnesses kindness cs behind the scene mrs anderson was born in malmo sweden and came to this country in 1989 a convert of ane L D S church she left her family and made the trip to the strange land alone she lived in ia salt lake city two years before her marriage to peter anderson and 1906 they came to the reservation to live on a homestead in ballard As a young woman in a frontier country she began her life of service she immediately took up relief society work in the roosevelt ward the ballard ward did not then exist she has continued to be one of the guiding hands in the worthy organization she served as counselor to the president and five years ago wai wac made president of the ward society during the past few years vears sn has has been instrumental in carrying c on the work of the church welfare program which includes making quilts and canning foods and caring for the needy she sayo say tier her work has always been a great pleasure because of the excellent cooperation and willing help always available another behind the scene activity of mrs anderson has been in connection with the christmas community celebration she has seen to it ever since the first celebration eb ration that santa claus has been ready for his arrival and has directed the making and filling of hundreds of stockings each year which santa claus presents to the boys and girls giris at the christmas eve program mrs airs andersons Ander sens deeds have added d a bright touch to the lives of many people when all brightness had left and the community is a better place for her having lived in it mattio J edwards mattie J edwards still affectionately tiona tely known to hundreds of her former students as aunt mat is one of the best known and most highly respected women of the ct community her circle of acquaintances quain made through her contacts with young people during her many years of teaching and her civic activity which has brought her in close touch with people all over the basin is is very wide before coming to roosevelt it in 1913 mrs airs edwards secured her hei degree from the university ol of utah and taught in salt lake city three years soon after coming here she began teaching at the roosevelt high school and became prominently identified with that institution as dean of girls and dramatic coach she practically mothered the girls of the high school all of whom came to love her and appreciate and welcome her advice school and home were not enough to keep mrs airs edwards i who was bursting with energy busy each summer for twelve of the U B I 1 C s seventeen years saw her hard at work on the committee either planning the department or helping the general committee she has been active in daughters T of pioneers organization b both th in city and county and was president of the duchesne county camp during the year the organization erected its first and only monument to father escalante located near duchesne much of the credit for the erection of the monument goes to mrs airs edwards who worked tirelessly on the project until it was realized always interested in culture and the development of the mind mrs edwards helped organize the frist literary club here which has grown into the altrus club for many years she has been a member of the roosevelt business and professional club which organization she now serves as presides pres idest during the years that mrs airs edwards has haa spent in roosevelt she has produced 45 plays which have provided great entertainment for hundreds of people many of them have been produced for charitable and civic projects for the betterment of the community and its people slie she has served the church in many capacities and has many other interests including P T A politics etc mrs edwards is dauntless no job is too big for her and her hei va value to her community is inestimable violet harrison arrison II violet harrison has long been 1 associated with club work and civic activity in eastern utah and for twenty years has gh given aen freely of her time and boun boundless dloss energy for the development of club activity which she believes brings about community cooperation and development through her business connections as well as her civic work she has always lent a helping hand to any project for community betterment and can always be found in the ranks ot of roosevelt boosters boasters bo mrs harrison arrison II first came to this section of the state in 1920 to serve as business manager of the vernal express newspaper in vernal she was a charter member of the business and professional club her business interests developed in roosevelt and in 1926 she moved here to make her home on march 21 1927 she organized the business and professional fess ional club and became its first president which office she has held for three different terms her great enthusiasm for the club and its worthwhile activities spurred the organization on to some of the fine things it has accomplished her leadership was recognized i by state officials of the business and professional clue and mrs harrison was appointed publicity chairman for the utah federation in 1933 1934 and 1935 during this time she organized and edited the first state club paper forward together in 1937 she was elected secretary of the state federation A charter member of the american I 1 legion auxiliary unit in vernal acher mrs airs harrison becar became ne active in the roosevelt organization ant and has held several offices an outstanding sportswoman known throughout the state for her hunting and fishing prowess mrs airs I 1 harrison wa was s the instigator of the roosevelt fish and game club which received nationwide publicity as the only fish and game in the country she served as president of this club three different years As the wife of mayor george G borge H harrison arrison II of roosevelt sh she e be came active in the utah state I 1 municipal luni cipal league lea gue auxiliary society socie and in 1939 was elected see sec detary treasurer of this organization the efforts of mrs harrison in behalf of her community have helped to make roosevelt a better place in which to live and her leadership acknowledged in several state circles has helped to make I 1 roosevelt a little better known I 1 viola credit for the tennis courts in the city park and the attractive blue and gold uniforms worn by the roosevelt high school band is due to energetic viola harmston who sees a project through to the bitter end before she gives up mrs airs harmston claims no credit for these stupendous tasks and maintains that she could do nothing alone that it was through the cooperation and help of club members and townspeople that the projects were finally completed but still there must be a lead leader e r who sees that things are kept going and mrs harmston is just that person she never gives up and if one plan fails she immediately turns to another whenever there is money to be raised for civic projects viola harmston is put on the job and her agile brain and ambitious spirit begin to conjure up ways and means for making money for the project and putting it over last year yeah under her guidance the band mothers club sponsored a dozen events including amateur contests dances carnivals dinners band day etc and before the year was out had on hand to pay for the band uniforms the project roused great enthusiasm and civic pride in the band and today the roosevelt high school has the finest band in its history the tennis courts in the park which are used every daylight hour in good weather will long stand as a tribute to the bu business siness and professional club and to 0 o mrs harmston who v fought every conceivable obstacle to carry the project through and see the courts built mrs airs harmston Il armston who has hat had three boys and a girl attend roosevelt schools has been a staunch supporter of the P T A and all school functions she takes an active interest in city and county poli politics and because she is so well informed in these ma matters aiters is an excellent example of a good citizen energetic determined dynamic and unafraid of work mrs harmstone Harms tons activities are cloa closely ly tied up with much of the progress in the community tina wilkins tina wilkins known as tiny because of her small stature has ocen the creative foice foce behind a good many of the celebrations and socials held in city and church here during the past thirty years she has served on literally hun beds of committees and is one oi 01 those industrious hardworking hard working women who got in and make things go mrs wilkins came here in 1907 at the ago age of 15 when roosevelt was a struggling frontier tent town for 28 years she has watched the city grow and develop and has had a hand in a ghou many of the activities and projects that have brought about its development her painting and musical talents talen tt have been devoted almost entirely to church school and city and there has scarcely been a social that she did not help with the hall decorating a float with which she did not assist either cither in designing or painting a banner or placard that failed to see her touch some of her art work a buckskin cover for a book published by the boyack chapter of future F farmers arm of america of the roose roosevelt velt high school received wide acclaim and was commented on b by y F F A officials in washington D C mrs airs wilkins was one of a group who organized a chapter of the rebekka lodge here one of the first clubs in roosevelt and served faithfully for many years as a member of the organization de voted to charity work the care of the sick and needy she was a captain of the roosevelt daughters of pioneers has served on several U B I 1 C committees and on the roosevelt parent ti orga organization niza tion her services at school clinics and various other school functions were always available the christmas celebration which has become one of the big annual events grew out of an original committee on street decorations headed by mrs wilkins mrs airs wilkins lias has always been ready when called upon by her church she has served in both the roosevelt ward and stake al I 1 A and relief society organizations and has bew been the guiding hand in in putting over many relief society bazaars dances and programs the statement that the busiest people have the most time to do things is often true in addition to raising a family of four children and often working along with her husband mrs wilkins has found time to serve her community very well mildred dilman in serving her people and brought to mrs airs dillman expressions of appreciation from all over the state and from several severa I 1 outside C points ln through her study of indian lore and culture mrs airs dillman has made many friends among the in deans thus increasing her knowledge ed and understanding of the red I 1 itol al lie ile personal p studies and ho hob iff fp bies have riot not hampered her cinci
