Show preparing for the centennial roosevelt and all other highway towns in utah have a mighty job ahead of them in the next few years to get ready for the states first world fair in honor of the one hundredth anniversary of the coming of the mormon pioneers to utah plans are already underway for the centennial celebration to be held in salt lake city during 1947 which thousands of tourists from all over the country are expected to visit the greatest percentage of these tourists will arrive in salt lake city by automobile via the nations highe highways ays one of the most important of which is U S 40 already the L D S church which will play a prominent role in the centennial as it has done in the development of the state has begun a program which calls for the improvement and beautification of all church buildings and property throughout the state and encouragement and aid in beautifying public and private property in the only recently a landscape expert sent by th the e church visited in roosevelt inspected all church and public property and made some valuable suggestions he made plans for continuing the beautification program at the church outlined landscaping for the hospital grounds when the building is completed aided the city council in mapping extensions and improvement at the city park and cemetery one of his ideas which the tha city hopes to carry out is the development of a beautiful natural rock garden on the rocky hill across the highway from the city cemetery mosses and native trees and shrubs can easily be planted around the rocks and water from the cemetery pipe line allowed to spray out over the slope within two or three years the landscape expert declared we would have a garden so attractive and unusual that all tourists would stop to take a picture and have a pleasant memory of this city to carry away with them he also suggested the building of a natural stone archway entrance to the cemetery this could be done inexpensively and perhaps by labor the beautification of utah highways and cities is the best advertising verti ver ing a state can have particularly when thousands of visitors will carry away with them to other states words of praise for people their sense of beauty and their ambition to carry it out roosevelt Rooe evelt hopes to be ready for the centennial with a great many improvements including the ones recommended by the church landscape artist to begin work on the extensive program a committee of citizens believed capable of pushing through the work was appointed point edat at the meeting of the city council monday evening by mayor george H harrison members are B 0 colton chairman clyde larsen lynn orser walter E atwood joseph moysh reva lundberg and tina wilkins other names to be added as the program develops |
