Show utah march 15 1931 dear editor 1 I have lived in this country a good many years waiting and hoping for the advent of a railroad proposed in david Mot Alof tats fats I 1 I 1 time and by subsequent moffat road oad managements in recent years and the people along tae present and proposed pio posed route being assured that if they voted the tunnel bond issue the railroad rall road would be completed through th tho the o basin to salt lake city and it has hals been the general beneral expectation that when the tunnel was completed or sooner tho the extension from craig would be built but certain interests connected with the Moffat road conceived the idea of building the Dot dottero dotsero serro cutoff cut off to which we all should have protested at the tini tinie e of the hearing on that subject insisting that the building of the cutoff cut off oft should be conditioned upon extending the lino line from craig through the basin to salt lake city as contemplated and promised from irne inception or of the moffat road but we wore were lulled into a belief that the cutoff cut off could not be built on accod account nt of power site alte withdrawals in grand canyon between dottero dotsero and or estad which with withdrawals draIs P president esl coolidge had bad refused to caneel cancel up to within a tow few months past we were assured by the interior department that these withdrawals were intact only to learn that coolidge had issued an order modifying the powersite power site withdraw als to permit a railroad lall lail road tight ight of way which he be now says he can not say was authorized by hirn him personally what a conveniently bad memory lie he must have to steadfastly decline to cancel the withdrawals and then not to remember whether no lae hid had afterwards modified tire order and what wonderfully accurate records are kept in government departments part ments at washington that we should be advised up until recently that these power sitz were intact abdail a railroad is given ghen a right of way through the canyon without some stipulation as to how nigh it shall be above the water level Is the power site withdrawal of any valus value for water stoa storage e recently the uintah basin rail road league and the tunnel deagro made an effort to secure a hearing on the needs of the country proposed to be served by the exten extension sian from cragg craige through the basin and were grant ed a soc so c called ailed hea hearing ing which was a farce all relevant testimony bei ing excluded by the so called examiner still more recently we understand our two leagues were promised promis Ld by the interstate commerce commission through our delegation in washington a rehearing hea in at which we would be permitted to introduce the evidence excluded in the former hearing such right being guaranteed by the interstate commerce act and now press ills dis state the commission has refused to grant this hearing going squarely back ou on promise to our delegation in washington to Is there any wonder there is a spread of communism wad and evist in the land when aben the powers that bo be refuse the just demands of the people apparently the interstate commerce commission waited until congress bad adjourned and our sen senators atos and representatives had left washing ton before going back on their promise probably tearing fearing congress might before adjournment take some action looking to a curtailment of their powes powe s in common with the majority senu ment as I 1 hear it expressed I 1 hope the railroad iea leagues aes ues will avill take the matter to the federal court and if necessary to the supreme court of the united states tor for we have tight ight on our side bide and these courts aro am fair and beyond unfair influence it R al |
