Show Chamber Of Commerce Will Fete Indian Basketball Teams The Roosevelt Chamber of. Commerce will fete the championship champ-ionship Ute basketball team that won honors in the Ute Tribe Recreation department tournament that was conducted during January and February. A banquet will be the main part of the program planned to honor the players and their wives or partners who were declared the champions. According to Dr. Paul String-ham, String-ham, Chamber president, the banquet will be held at Fort Duchesne with representatives of Kiwanis, Lions, the Chamber of Commerce and officials of the Ute Tribe and Indian Agency Agen-cy supporting the program. 1 A report was heard from .the road committee on the Uinta Canyon oiling and repairing Roosevelt Main Street. Encouragement Encour-agement had come from the Forest Service and Indian Department De-partment that they would contribute con-tribute toward the project, but would have to take the project under advisement. The committee commit-tee composed of Howard Harrison Harri-son and Merlin Sullivan, co-chairmen, co-chairmen, and Kenneth -Aycock met with the Duchesne county .commission Tuesday to ask their cooperation. They were advised a study of their road program would be made and consideration made of the request. re-quest. ' (Continued on Back Page) C. Commerce (Continued from page 1) Information from the Utah State Road Department ' indicates indi-cates Reosevelt's Main Street will be repaired this year, with a promise of a complete realignment realign-ment project in the offing for 1955. A request from the state that the city undertake a special curb and gutter program for Main Street, is receiving serious study by the city officials. The state will send its engineering engineer-ing department to Roosevelt in the near future to make a complete com-plete survey of Highway 40 through the city. As soon as this is completed it is highly possible that a notice of intention inten-tion to declare a special improvement im-provement district will be advertised. ad-vertised. This would obligate the property owner to pay the cost of new curbs, gutters and sidewalks. When this is done the state will lay a paved road from curb to curb. Cleaning Main Street It was pointed out by the committee who also reported on the recent very successful cleanup clean-up project sponsored jointly by the Chamber and the city, that it is almost impossible to keep the streets clean unless they can be washed. Washing under the present conditions is not practical because of drainage problems. Considerable thought was given giv-en to keeping the debris cleared from Main Street with the directors di-rectors favoring a program of trying to encourage ALL of the business operators to assume responsibility of their own. It was recommended that each sweep his own sidewalk and gutters and pile debris into the cans. If it is done the city will see that the cans are emptied as often as necessary. Hope is given that those who have failed to support this project will get on the band-wagon. Another business benefit discussed dis-cussed was business operators and their employees who utilize the valuable parking space on the Main Street. It was recommended recom-mended by the merchants committee com-mittee that the parking spaces be left for potential customers and not be appropriated to store personnel use. |
