Show Utah Expenditures Hit $127,947,788 For Biennium Ending Last June 30 Expenditures of the Utah state government totaled $127,-947,788 $127,-947,788 for the biennium ended June 30, 1949. This is a $41 million increase over the previous pre-vious two-year period ended June 30, 1947 when $86,583,432 was required to meet state government gov-ernment committments. Since the Utah Legislature meets every ev-ery two years and appropriations appropria-tions are made covering a biennial bi-ennial period, expenditure totals to-tals quoted correspond to the two-year periods covered by the legislative appropriations. The state outlay for the 1948-49 1948-49 biennium, totaling nearly $128 million for the two years, was possible without the state incurring serious deficits because be-cause revenue far exceeded advance ad-vance estimates. Total income of the state government amounted amount-ed to $127,477,085 for the biennium bi-ennium ended June, 1949. This was nearly $25 million more than advance estimates, and $29 million more than actual receipts re-ceipts for the previous two-year two-year period. Estimates of revenue rev-enue and expenditures are prepared pre-pared by the state budget officer of-ficer preceeding the meeting of the legislature. These estimates are the basic information employed em-ployed by the legislature in ap- I propriating state funds for the I following biennium. ' The increased participation of I the state government in costs of education accounts for $2012 j million of the total $41 million increase in state expenditures during the two-year period from July 1, 1947 to June 30, 1949. Of the $202 million increase in educational cost, $9 million results from added state property pro-perty tax levy for school funds, authorized by a constitutional amendment in 1947. i i i Total expenditures of the colleges col-leges of the state increased from $10V2 million for the biennium bi-ennium ended June, 1947 to $17'2 million for the biennium ended June, 1949. The public school system of Utah expended expend-ed $60 million in the two years 1948 and 1949, compared with $37 million in the two years 1946 and 1947. State and federal fed-eral funds accounted for $29 million of the $60 million total iin 1948-49. compared with $17 million out of $37 million in 1946-47. Education, public welfare, and ;highways accounted for nearly 78 per cent of the total expenditures ex-penditures of Utah state government. govern-ment.
