Show BjbeO I was reading in a book the other night which was written by one of these eastern dudes what comes out here every once in a while, spends a month or two talking to Indians and then goes back home and writes about the Indians from a "expert" point of view. Seems as though there are more words written with less sense to them on the "Indian Problem" than any other so called call-ed "problems" of a problem loving lov-ing age. Every which way you turn, seems like some problem pops up, but I'm saying there aint no Indian problem. If you just stop to think they are human like the rest of us, got the same desires de-sires and wants and like to see thei.r young-uns get ahead just the same as you and me why there just aint no Indian problem as I can see it, unless its just the old problem we have with each other, of just learning to get along together. Had a long talk with Jasper Cuch over to the Fort yesterday. We done hunkered down on the sunny side of the Agency office and rolled ourselves a couple of hand-mades and got a powerful lot of palavering done in mighty short order. We talked of the old days when his family and my family was yourlg-uns and they used to roll in the yards together and how they grow up and go away from you and how sorta lonesome it gets. He says his boys are all coming back from the wars all right, that they is figuring figur-ing on making something of themselves by going on to school. He had three boys in the army, Jason, Wilbur and Henry and two of them is already back and the other scheduled for home before be-fore spring. Jasper and his wife are the busiest people over to the Fort.since they sorta take care of the school, the office, the club and several others around there. I just dont think they could run the Agency without them, neither. The same day was what they call "Office Day" at the Fort and they sure did come in from far and near. Like one of the old time councils they used to have for gathering in people. Saw a lot of my old friends and got together for a lot of talking. Met up with enough of the real old timers to last a long time. There was Togarvis, McKewan, Alberto Ccsspooch, Sidney Atwine, San-tio, San-tio, Pawwinnee, Robert Colorow, Lawrence Appah, Billy Chapoose Ben Butler and lots more that I aint seen for some time. Sure like to see them and talk with them. Been trying to catch up with Chalmers Wash for some time since I haven't seen him for some time. Ran into him on the street the other day and got a chance to pass the time of day with him. He's looking fine doesn't seem to have changed a bit these last years. Course he's still a young man just getting along towards his middle thirties you might say, but running a outfit such as he does sure puts it on a man. He's got several hundred of mighty fine Herefords and runs them just right. But these days of short help, sure do make him put in the long hours. He says his cattle are coming through the winter fine with plenty of feed for the March pull. Got a lot more I could spill, but the time is getting along towards ten oclock and we old duffers need plenty of sleep, so guess I'll hit the hay. Good night, folks. |
