Show Chart May Predict Volcanic Activity The islands in the Aleutian chain are being charted magnetically mag-netically by the Navy, which hopes that the data gained will some day make it possible to predict tidal waves and volcanic eruptions. Using a now war weapon which spotted enemy submarines, airplanes fly over the islands for the purpose of detecting j large bodies of molten rock near j the earth's surface. These, it is understood, give possible notice of future volcanic or seismic activity ac-tivity which might affect shins or planes. It might enable the scientists to predict tidal waves, eruptions which block harbor entrances, and clouds of volcanic ash that fill the skies. It is noted that the Aleutian trough, along the southern side of the islands, has been the origin ori-gin of many destructive tidal waves. Observations will also be made on the ground and similar surveys will be conducted in the Hawaiian and. Marshall Islands. While the survey has not proceeded pro-ceeded far enough to make possible pos-sible any positive predictions, the Navy announcement says indications in-dications are "encouraging that hot or molten rock can be detected." |
