Show DDT Use Increases Livestock Profits Fifty pounds of extra beef for ten cents' worth of wettable DDT, without need for extra feed to effect the gain, has been achieved by several hundred progressive Utah farmers this year, declared Dr. G. F. Knowl-ton, Knowl-ton, Utah State Extension entomologist, en-tomologist, today. Dairy farmers have profited in the same way, by destroying hornfly and housefly annoyance, through spraying dairy cattle and barns with DDT-water sprays two or three times during the summer, the entomologist re- ported. "This results in increased milk production and cleaner milk, at very little added cost." Often the gain in milk production has equaled a 10 to 20 per cent increase, in-crease, as compared with production pro-duction of cattle seriously 'annoyed 'an-noyed by flies. It is not too late in the season to derive benefit from spraying cattle, hogs and barns with DDT-water sprays, he advised. Such control now reduces winter win-ter death loss of range cattle and improves health conditions in livestock generally. |
