Show Advise Given On Fly Pest Control Horn flies have begun to appear ap-pear in large numbers and to annoy cattle by sucking their blood and preventing them from making normal gains in weight,. Dr. G. F. Knowlton, Utah State Agricultural College Extension I Entomologist warned today. These annoying fly pests can be controlled safely and cheaply however, by applying DDT as a spray, he said. Gains averaging or exceeding exceed-ing one half pound per head daily have commonly occurred in treated animals above that of i untreated animals on similar i feed, Dr. Knowlton reported. I Calves make even greater gains ; as their mothers produce more milk for them. DDT is safe to use and it controls con-trols houseflies, blowflies, mos-j quitoes, lice and most ticks as well as horn flies, the entomologist entomolo-gist said. Most farmers who use DDT for controlling lice and horn flies are using it even more generally this year for fly and mosquito control, he reported. "Making 50 pounds of extra meat through the application of 10 cents worth of DDT per animal ani-mal is just good business," he concluded. |
