Show Giant Air Pincers Facing Japs VNTi '' .- PACIFIC gp CH,NA JiiisBM J(f r iCT0gMSAt i When the U S Amphibious Forces and the new 20th Air Force began joint operations against Nippon, it became evident evi-dent that soon no part of Japan, nor of Japan's inner defense ring would long be safe and this map shows why. For once Saipan has been taken by the determined determin-ed American invaders, it will be the springboard for giant aerial pincers and, doubtless, Guam will be a big sister base in the Marianas. Devestating aerial campaigns can be carried on from China or from the Islands, ' or from both against Tojo's industries in-dustries and military bases. From Saipan, Tokyo is less than 1,500 miles. New amphibious and air attacks on the Bonins could be readily launched. Hence the Saipan Sai-pan invasion may well be the beginning of the end in the Pacific. |
