Show Duchesne Brothers IRil!!ed By Japs DUCHESNE Mr. and Mrs. Arzy Mitchell of Duchesne recently re-cently received word that their sons. Howard H. and Wayne E. lost their lives on October 7, 19-43 19-43 at the hands of the Japanese. The two brothers were employees employ-ees of the Morrison-Knudson Construction Company, and were engaged in the building of the naval air base on the ill-fated island when it fell to the Japanese Jap-anese in December. 1941. Howard Mitchell was born March 16. 1918 at Vernal, Utah. He attended the Duchesne high school, and worked in the machine ma-chine shops at Moon Lake and on the Deer Creek project. He joined -the company of Morrison and Knudson, and left for Wake Island in June, 1941. He was rated rat-ed as a mechanic first class. Wayne E. Mitchell was born June 20, 1920 at Hayden. Utah. He was a graduate of the Du-krhesne Du-krhesne high school, and attended the Brisham Young University and the Utah State Agricultural Collrre. Ho was engaged by the MorrisoivKnudvon Company for work at Wake Island, and left the States in October, 1941. In the heroic defense of Wake Inland. Howard and Wayne were active participants. Howard was wounded in the early davs of the encounter with the Japanese while Wayne continued in the inland's defense until its fall Der-pmbpr 23. 1941. The Mitchell brothers were active members of the L. D. S. church, and were respected and leved by their many friends and relatives throughout the' state. They are survived bv their narents. two brothers. Truman A. and Loron H. Mitchell, and one sitr, Mrs. Alfreds M. Had-ricn Had-ricn of Duchesne. |
