Show WiilS BOARD HOLDS INITIAL SESSION TO DISCUSS PROORAM Seven Projects Due For Consideration; Vets Memorial And Recreational Area Seen In its first session, held on January 16, Roosevelt's newly created planning board heard Mayor George H. Harrison outline out-line proposals for the city's improvement im-provement during 1946. Under the chairmanship of J. V. McLea, the planning board discussed with Mayor Harrison seven projects pro-jects in the offing for Roosevelt. This initial meeting, which lasted last-ed over a period of three hours, brought to light the need for the planned improvements, and the ever present question of how to finance them. Projects Named The seven proposals considered consider-ed to be the most important at the present are: the pumping project; pro-ject; the four and one-half mile water line north to a new $112,- 000 reservoir; installation of a sewer system in Plat E, and the completion of the sewer line in the upper part of town; the establishment, es-tablishment, construction, and management of a suitable veterans' veter-ans' memorial; the improvement of South Park as a recreational area; a zoning ordinance for Roosevelt; and an immediate conference con-ference with the Governor to discuss dis-cuss future road construction. Plans Outlined In the case of the South Park improvement project it was tentatively ten-tatively planned to develop and maintain it as a corporation, with every interested resident being permitted to purchase stock in the company. Members of the planning board are currently engaged en-gaged in obtaining the expressions expres-sions of individuals as to whether or not they might be interested ;n an investment of this nature. The planning board was unanimous unan-imous in favoring the forming of a corporation to give Roosevelt i badly needed recreational area. ar-ea. Visualizing a park suitable for the holding of rodeos, plus a race track and grounds set aside "V baseball, the board considers this project of paramount importance. im-portance. As a fitting memorial to the veterans of two world wars, it was suggested at the Wednesday session that any thought of erect- ng a monument give way to the establishment of a well landscaped landscap-ed park; an area which would stand as a living symbol of appreciation ap-preciation to the veterans. It was felt that no finer memorial could be instituted than one which would lend beauty to the community. com-munity. A further suggestion was to the effect that the communities communi-ties immediately adjacent to Roosevelt be invited to consider and participate in the establishment establish-ment of such a memorial as an area symbol of appreciation, and not merely the remembrance of one grateful city. , The success of the planning board idea in other communities is well founded. As a liason between be-tween the citizens of a town and Us duly elected council, the functioning func-tioning of such boards has brought about a keener understanding under-standing of civic problems. Since planning boards must accept ac-cept the suggestions of every cit-;zen cit-;zen Interested in a community's development, it brings those citizens closer to an understanding understand-ing of civic affairs. The next planning board meeting is scheduled for January Janu-ary 30. Prior to adjournment the board elected Floyd Roberts to serve as vice-chairman. |
