Show EDITORIAL: Rebellion In The "Flats" The little matter of the city's continued failure to complete the sewer system according to the terms of its agreement has loosened loos-ened a spirit of secession in the "Flats." Like the patriots of pre-Revolutionary War days who challenged the British' Empire with their "No taxation without representation," so the people of Plat E throw this question at Roosevelt's governing body: "Where's the sewer that cost each of us S200?" No one can blame any resident of the "Flats" for voicing a complaint. com-plaint. Their's is the most justifiable "beef" that ever came from a group of citizens, and it's a credit cred-it to their patience that they didn't force a show-down months pgo. The history of this sewer situation sit-uation as it affects northeastern Roosevelt is too well known to repeat in its entirety. However, there are one or two important facts that should here be recalled. re-called. First, the city needed S 12,000 in cash before it could, extend and finisli the sewer system in Plat E. , So the, city dads exacted $200 on the' line from every home owner in that section. In return the dwellers in the "Flats" were pomised a completed com-pleted sewer system with the city furnishing the pipe. On the strength of this promise, trenches were dug dug a year ago many of which still stand open; others have caved in. Evidence that the people of Plat E are genuinely civic minded can be ascertained from the fact that they came through with the needed $12,000 within a few short hours, pulled the city out of a hole, but have received re-ceived small compensation for their trouble. ' Now in utter disgust, a few of the people in the ""Flats" are making arrangements for their own pipe As for others, they're saying let the city live up to its agreement, and furnish the pipe we were promised. To which might be added an Amen. If the city cannot fulfill that which it promised, then let it make the facts known to those who paid the demanded $200 fee. A public statement pointing out the reasons for not keeping faith, by one authorized to make such an utterance might remove some of the bitterness that's mounting in the "Flats." But in the meantime the people in Plat E are certain that they have been, or are being, taken for a ride, and a sharp amount of persuading will be necessary to convince them otherwise. |
