Show Army Chiefs Call For Re-enlistments To Police Germany From Germany comes the news of an American Lieutenant-( General, addressing 15,000 division di-vision and constabulatory troops after summer manoeuvers. and appealing to them to extend their enlistments because of the grave international situation. Lieutenant-General Clarence R. Hucbner said: "I don't need to tell you how tense the world is today. I don't need to tell you how short our ranks are. We need you so much." Major-General Frank W. Mil-burn, Mil-burn, Commander of the First Division, joining his superior officer of-ficer in appealing for reenlist-mcnts, reenlist-mcnts, told the men: "Our authorized auth-orized strength is 18,000. We are: short of that by 6,000." If these remarks represent a i truthful picture of the condition of American forces in Germany, it is high time that the nation permits its Selective Service system sys-tem to get into operation. Imag-i ine, if you please, the richest nation na-tion in the world and one of the first powers on the earth, find- ing it difficult to keep a skeleton armed force in control of an area won as a result of a great war. It is enough to make earnest Americans shudder. The United States, if it is still in the infantile infan-tile stage, should withdraw from the rest of the world: or, if it stays' in, should play a full hand and take the necessary steps to enable it to play the game. |
