Show Fire Hazard Unequalled Un-equalled On Ashley And Uintah Forests Dry hot days and a shortage of moisture in the watersheds has created a fire hazard on the Ashley and Uintah forests this season of the year, according to the Forest Service officials. Conditions Con-ditions which bring about the dreaded fire season are about sixty days early. The forests are in a state equivalent to what might be expected during the middle of August and the Forest Service is voicing a warning that the utmost caution must be exercised. exer-cised. In the opinion of Forest Ranger Rang-er George Walkup of the Ashley National Forest the only other season comparable to the present one occurred in 1919. With the extremely dangerous forest con-1 con-1 ditions in mind, Ranger Walkup 1 appeared before the directors of the Roosevelt Flying Service on Wednesday night to solicit cooperation- in watching for fires from the air. The flying service I was asked to be on a constant lookout during student training land routine flights for signs of smoke in the Uintah mountains. I "The Uintah Canyon fire last week was the result of carelessness, careless-ness, carelessness that destroyed 1 37 acres of the best recreation grounds on the Ashley Forest." I Ranger Walkup said. "The camp grounds on the national forests belong to the people and have been developed for their enjoyment, enjoy-ment, but unless the public will recognize the serious danger of the present early fire season and exercise every precaution while making use of the camp grounds it may become necessary to with- j draw the camp grounds from public use until the fire hazard has passed," Mr. Walkup advised. Fishermen, picnikers and automobile auto-mobile travelers who have occas-sion occas-sion to travel forest roads are being be-ing urged to observe all fi.rc rules and to report immediately any fire which may come under their observations. Users of the public camp grounds are admonished to make certain that their fires are under control at all times and that every spark must be extinguished exting-uished before leaving the area. Smokers are cautioned against throwing lighted cigarettes, cigars cig-ars or pipe ashes from car windows win-dows and are asked further not to smoke while walking through the forests. |
