Show Auxiliary Sets EV3ay 24 For Annual Poppy Sale May 24th will be Poppy Day in Rogsevelt and throughout the United States, Mrs. Lee Allred, president of Basin 64 unit of the American Legion Auxiliary, announced an-nounced today. On that day everyone wiU he asked tp wear a rnearpria.l noppy in honpr qf the. dead of the two World Wars and to make a contribution con-tribution for the welfare of the disabled veterans, th.Qir families and the familios of the dead. Volunteers from the Auxiliary and young women's grqups of the city will distribute the flowers flow-ers on the streets throughout the da.y, Mrs. Steve Bellon, Poppy chairman of the Auxiliary, will be in general charge. Plans are being made to cover the city completely so that everyone will have an opportunity to honor the war dead and aid the living victims of the two conflicts. "The Saturday before Memorial Memor-ial Day has been observed as Poppy Day in all parts of the country for many years," said Mrs. Allred, in announcing the date of this year's observance. "Poppies have been worn in memory of the war dead eer since the close of World War I. They are replicus of the wild flowers which' grew on the battle fields" of France and QeL gium, fought over in both wars, but they have come to symbolize memory, for those who 'died in any part of the world. "The poppies which the Auxiliary Aux-iliary will distribute are all hand made, shaped from crepe paper by disabled veterans working in hospitals and convalescent workshops work-shops throughout the country. The dibbled men takq special pride in making the flowers to honor their fallen comrades and the work M valuable to them as occupational therapy, besides bringing them much needed earnings." |
