Show Lesson In English By -W. L. Gordon Words Often Misused Do not say, "The wedding occurred oc-curred at the bride's home." Say: "The wedding took place at the bride's home." Things lake place by arrangement; they occur usually us-ually by chance or accident. Do not say, "The rule is not appliable in this case." Say: "The rule is not applicable in this case." Say, "At last (in the course of time) he arrived," and, "He discussed dis-cussed the conditions at length (in full detail.)" Do not say, "Among those present were Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Jones, and others." Omit others. End the sentence with, and Mrs. Jones." Do not say, "It is no use for me to write." Say, "Is is of no use for me to write." Do not say, "The distant sounds were audible to the ear." To the ear is tautological, as audible means capable of being heard (by the ear.) Words Often Mispronounced Discharge. Accent both noun and verb on second syllable, not the first as so often heard. Jeopardize. Pronounce jep-er-diz, first e as in bet, i as in prize, accent first syllable. |
