FIRST TROUSERS FOR UTTLE BOY May Be Made to Train Him in Self-Relianc- e. ..... , (Prepared bjr the United statae Department af AirlcuHura) The clothes worn by a little boy, be-tween two and three years old, may be made to help train him In e If carefully designed. If he la obliged always to ran to some older person to be dressed, battened and un-buttoned, he does not develop the In-dependence that he should have aa he comes into contact with other chil- - result. Aa In all the trousers de-signed by the clothing spectalista of the bureau, these are above the knee and are roomy enough to be comfort-able, especially In the seat. The blouse Illustrated haa several good points. The simulated collar la stitched fliit and so are the trimming banda on the sleeves, which are pur-posely made very abort This gives greater freedom and does' not inter-fere, with the bend of the elbow. A printed fabric with a email pattern la colors harmonising with the plain col-or of the trousers anil trimming la ap-propriate for a boy between two and three, but nnflgured materials may be used If preferred. . , dren and people outside of the family circle. Being able to do things for oneself Is a great source of It la also a convenience to any mother to have her child able to dress himself without her help and go to the toilet alone. He soon begins to take pride In selecting what he wishes to wear, and at this stage can be taught very readily to take care of his clothes, both when he wears them and when tbey ought to be put away er laid out, ready for another day. In the past, one of the greatest ob-stacles to complete Independence en-countered by the smell boy has been the complicated system of buttons and belts around his waist. There seems to be no reason why boys' trousers Practical Suit for Small Boy. should have so many buttons and openings. And In different suits thev may be In different places, so that the special manipulation of each suit has to be learned. After atudylng the faults of boys' suits as made heretofore and the ways to remedy them, the bureau of home economics of the United States De-partment of Agriculture has designed a number of practical suits which overcome some of the most undesir-able features. It is suggested thot until a little boy has learned to solve the problem of how to fasten his own things, the same basic design be nsed for all his trousers so that buttons and buttonholes will always be In the same convenient place. Variety may be ob-tained by slight changes in detail, color, material,, and so on. Simple front openings are recommended, with buttons and buttonholes that are eas-ily manipulated and uniform In size.. For a very small boy who wears the Oliver Twist type of suit which has the trousers buttoned to the blouse, a simple and satisfactory design la shown in the picture. The trouser leg Is cut without a side seam and the placket Instead of being on the side Is slanted forward to make a front drop. The plackets are finished to simulate welt pockets with a fairly wide underlap. The front aectlon laps over the back In these trousers, but only four buttons are used, and ther are so accessible that the little boy will have no trouhle in buttoning them correctly. This location of the but-tons Is especially good in the case of a boy who likes to climb because but-tons on the side seams often cause binding and are frequently torn off as F .pi rai n"re11rtr ' t ' . . He determined to write a harmless pre-scription which would get at the cause of constipation, ana correct it. Today, the prescription he wrote in 1885 is the world's most popular laxative I He prescribed a mixture of herbs and other pure ingredients now known as Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, in thousands of cases where bad breath, coated tongue, gas, headaches, biliousness and lack of appetite or energy showed the bowels of men, women and children were sluggish. It proved successful in even the most obstinate cases; old folks liked it for it never gripes; children liked its pleasant taste. All drugstores today have Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin in bottles. (Prtpwte bf the ITnllae Stttw ttoptrtmwt of Arrlcultur.) The United States Department of Agriculture recommends some of the following ways of using cold cooked rice: Cold rice, or rice reheated by steam-ing, may be used as a breakfast dish with sugar and cream, with stewed fruits with baked or coddled apples. Klce reheated by steaming msy be served on a platter surrounded with carrots and peas, or turned over la Drowned butter or other fat Bice may be combined with vege-tables and served cold with cheese sauce or mayonnaise aa a salad. Rice may be used for thickening soups, or in scalloped dishes Instead of bread crumbs, or combined with chopped meat and seasoned with on-ion, parsley, or celery seed and made Into croquettes. Bice mixed with a little chopped meat and green pepper or celery makes a good stuffing for tomatoes or baked fish, or to place between two steaks of fish for baking. The tougher cuts of meat may be combined in stews with leftover rice, Bice may be recooked In milk, and a little butter or other fat and sugar added. This makes a nourishing dish for children or Invalids. Bice scalloped with white sauce In which chopped or grated cheese has been melted, makes a substantial and appetizing dish suitable for luncheon for supper. Water from cooked rice may be used In soups, for the liquid in scalloped dishes, or for starching sheer mate, rials. This language was like-wise quoted by an Ohio court Waa at Driver's Peril. "In a case in the state of Washing-ton, the Supreme court of that com- - monwealth held that to proceed at all. In the face of those conditions, was at his (driver's) peril.' "However, the general theory seems to be that whether It Is negligence to proceed driving an automobile in the face of blinding lights, depends upon the circumstances, to be decided by a Jury, and not by any specific rule of laor "Most states have adopted legisla-tion providing for proper lights. The Illinois motor vehicle act provides that drivers approaching each other st night must dim their lights when not less than 250 feet apart; the Indiana statute specifies that drivers must dim the lights when approaching each other, and the Wisconsin code orders lights operated In such a manner that there will be no glare or dazzle, and also provides for official stations where lights shall be tested." Soy beans have been utilized for many centuries by the peo-ple of the oriental countries In the preparation of numerous fresh, fer-mented, and dried food products. Extensive experiments in North America and Europe Indicate the value of soy beans as the basis of food for persons requiring a low starch diet, says the United States Department of Agriculture, and for many years food companies have had on the market forms of soy bean flour prepared for persons requiring a diet of this kind. Investigations have .shown that soy bean flour as a gruel is a most val able food for infants. Enough Victim "Hey I Tou've nicked my face In six places 1" Barber "Then I'll charge yon cut rates." BROILED HUTCH-RAISE- D RABBIT IS FINE Tender, Sweat-Fleshe- d Domestic Rabbit Broiled. (Pftparad by tha Unltad Stataa Departmant af AfTlcultura.) Broiled chicken why not broiled rabbit T Perhaps you have seen lately In your local market some of the or hutch-raise- d rabbits that are being extensively produced from West to East. You have wondered whether the family would like them; the "gamy" flavor of wild rabbit was not especially popular. Without hesitation you can experi- - suit the meat Is delicate In flavor and tender In texture. They may be eaten at any time of the year. The bureau of home economics of the United States Department of Agri-culture gives the following directions for broiling a rabbit: Wipe the rabbit with a clean damp cloth, sprinkle It with salt pepper and flour. Place whole, back down, on a rack in a flat baklnr Dan. Place awi. meni witn some or tnese tender, sweet-fleshe- d domestic rabbits. The meat can best be compared to that of chick-en, and It Is cooked In all the ways chicken Is cooked. Get a young rab-bit to try. and broil it Put It on the table without comment and some members of the family will suppose they are eating chicken. These hutch-raise- d rabbits eat rolled cereals, alfal-fa hay and leafy vegetables. As a re-- erous pieces of butter In the hollow places. Cook in t moderately hot oven (37C to 400 degress Fahrenheit) for 40 to 60 minutes, or until tender. Turn the rabbit over, baste with pea drippings and place under the flame of the broiling oven to brown. Cut and serve the broiled rabbit on a hot plat- ter and pour over it the drippings mixed with one tablespoonful of finely chopped parsley. Air Cleaners Useful on Practically All Autos Air cleaners which are used on prac-tically all automobiles prevent dust from entering the engines, minimiz-ing wear on pistons, rings, bearings and other vital ports. As a rule the type air cleaner will operate without attention for a period of one year. However, when a car Is operated under extreme-ly dusty conditions cleaning should be done more often. Cleaning and Is accomplished in the following "x manner either by the car owner him-self or the service man. Remove the cleaner and wash It thoroughly by moving It up and down In a pall of gasoline. Allow the clean-er to dry for a few minutes and then saturate the filtering muterial with oil and replace. It Is Important and necessary to clean and re-o- ll the type air cleaner as Indicated, In order to maintain Its maximum cleaning eff-iciency, according to H. Q. Kamrath, research engineer. AUTOMOBILE FACTS "Auto fumes mode safe," says scientist. The t same motor run at the same speed equipped with a new set of plugs gave a horse power reading of 38.0, an in-crease of 6.8 horse power. w Maintenance Does Pay Motorists today often say that car care on a detailed scale is not worth while, since "when you go to trade the car In they give you only so much, regardless of condition." That's a poor argument, on two scores. First, condition does count with the dealer, and, second, it Is ridiculous to drive so Inefficient car when a tittle Ju-dicious care will make It ship-shap- e.
