They offered to leave their coat and vest as security for the amount, of Mr. Call was afraid a Call would not pay his bills. As they were bonified Irish, akin could not be recognized, so he refused the loan. They went over to James Arbuckle. Their names were Arbuckle then. They got fifty cents of him and made their way towards the saloon. About 11 o'clock they were down in the northwest corner of town, gathering up chickens, buckets, store kettles and such things. There were three of them by this time. They called at one house and asked for pepper and salt, claiming to be camped about two miles away with a herd of cattle which they were going to sell to Arbuckle. He gave them the seasoning, and as they were suspicious suspi-cious appearing fellows, he followed up with a shot gun. They prowled around through the fields, around the stacks, listening at the windows, as though they were shunting for a house with no man at home, until persuaded ,Y. Jlo leave by the night watchman. They had supper in the field. It consisted of a couple of half cooked chickens, potatoes, bread and a bottle of alcohol. About 2 o'clock they went to Centreville Switch and demanded a bed. Here they were met by a man and a gun. They were told they could go the strawstack in the field. They said they were not hunting strawstacks, but they were porffered nothing better. They left, and we have not herd from them since. |
