Show citizens committee reports JL i grazing condition study on the fishlike fishlake Fish lake national forest cites overpopulation over population of big game in letter to e county comity planning boards in a letter addressed june 22 2 to county planning boards of se sevier v ier 1 wayne piute diute beaver and millard T counties a committee of citizens reports a study of grazing conditions on the fishlake fishlike Fish lake national forest concluding it with the following paragraphs it would appear if the agricultural tu ral and livestock interests are arc to be protected the range resources conserved the ranch owners allowed to make a living from the products of their ranches and presen present taxes maintained or increased with out an increase in the tax levy that the deer herd must be reduced to the carrying capacity of the range by allowing each hunter to mil idil both a buck and doe deer and that a hunting season of 21 days be established instead of the pre sent 11 day season and that all citizens who have the welfare and best interests of our state at heart should highly approve of corrective measures to remedy the bad big game problem that has developed we are prepared to substantiate te the statements made in this letter by reports pictures and by actual examination of the depleted deer range accompanying this letter are two pictures recently taken of the deer range within the fishlake fishlike Fish lake forest east of annabella you will vill be rendering a highly valuable public service to perfect plans and offer the wholehearted cooperation of your board in solving the big game problems not only in your county but in all counties where the overpopulation over population of big game has become a problem the letter calls attention to the fact that the people in the counties mentioned are largely engaged in the livestock and in agricultural ri pursuits and that any thing that reduces the value of ag r v xi ri cultural land or livestock makes it more difficult for the owners of such property to maintain a decent cecen living to meet their financial ob libations ligat ions to pay their taxes and to support the school units and the county and municipal governments it indicates that the deer herd on the forest has grown from approximately in 1920 to an estimated in 1938 with the result that overgrazing over grazing is not only threatening the vegetation but also the watershed protected by this vegetation the report will be published in detail in next weeks issue of the reaper the letter is signed by E II I 11 I street C A mattsson ferdinand erickson L A poulson J C whittaker W B pace J vernon vemon erickson miles L nielson and byron hawley of sevier county citizens from the other four counties affected and geo H hansen of the B M Y a former richfield man who also studied the conditions |
