Show BA K STAND or CLUB ON DOE BEER KILLING other civic groups join in opposing unsupervised shooting the action taken by the alsoc assoc associated civic clubs of of southern utah in entering a protest against ag the ma method maethol adopted by the state fish and game department in reducing the deer herds of the state created a great deal of favorable c criticism and induced action by many other organizations at the delta meeting the cige civic c group on november 10 and ILI 11 the directors voted to carry on a campaign to protect the interests of southern utah in the big game and urge hunters to refrain from killing doe even though it is legal the following letter was sent to every civic club and newspaper in southern utah and the state papers dc doted considerable space to the subjects subject adding their com ments the associated civic clubs of southern utah wishes to call your attention to the possibility of the open season on doe deer recently announced by the state fish and game commissioner at the direction of the big game control board having a very serious effect on one of southern profitable industries this matter was thoroughly discussed at our meeting in delta november 10 and 11 and the following points brought out 1 all except one of the areas to toe be opened are in southern utah and the other is on private land 2 generally speaking those thos complaining of damage done by deer have no real complaint and even so the conditions will not be remedied by the plan announced 3 there is grave danger of far more than 1600 head being killed many doe are now wet and therefore in poor flesh and of little food value hunters will likely keep shooting until they get a fat one 4 thousands of hunters visit southern utah each year during the buck season and spend an average of 40 each we cannot afford to gamble on losing this bustness business 5 during the average winter the loss in the deer herd is 10 per cent during a severe winter it might easily climb to nearer 50 per cent as it did a few years ago on the kaibab forest and thereby ruin hunting for many years 6 it has not been conclusively proven that the ranges are over grazed 7 the first announcement of a doe season caused such a breakdown in the protective attitude of sportsmen toward doe deer that more were killed this year than in the past five years further killing of does will cause a complete breakdown of the protective system our organization feels that if it is necessary to reduce the herd that it should be done by state game wardens or under the strict supervision of sportsmens sports mens associations at this late date the only way to combat the open season as planned and protect the interests of southern utah in the deer herd is by a campaign among the sports men of the state appealing to their sportsmanship and urging that they refrain from taking out permits and shooting doe deer we urge that the members of your tour organization immediately contact every association and individual possible with the request that they do all possible on this matter the above letter explains the bostion of the associated civic clubs and sportsmen owe the organization a vote of thanks for their timely consideration of a subject so vital to this section of the state As frank G martines Martl nes explains probably the proper method of handling the situation if it is absolutely sol necessary to reduce the bierds would have been to open the season in these areas on both doe and buck at the same time or bave the shooting done now by the state game wardens and picked sportsmen who would shoot only barren does this method would likely cost the state less am aa many sportsmen would gladly help with the shooting without pay the meat could be given to the poor and needy families |
