Show f jt I 1 A rv estock vezuto C ck S cut ku 41 R AU I 1 V LOS ANGELES july 9 1925 1926 eradication of tuberculosis from the lain dairy herds in the west is not only a public health problem but it is one of the most 1 important economic problems before the livestock industry today there is a sentiment among both the livestock interests and among others looking towards the cleaning up of tuberculosis herds it seems to be generally agreed that a tuberculosis cow will cat as much or more feed than the healthy animal but will not produce as much milk the cow is merely a machine through which the dairyman conver converts s his grain and pasture into a marketable product if that machine is impaired through aisea disease e and if the life of the machine is shortened from the same cause there there seems to be no sound econ economic ornic reason why that machine should not be discarded in favor of one in perfect condition this is just what the dairymen of the southwest as well as in most other parts of the united states are doing in some instances the elimination of the tuberculosis cow is being forced through state or county law with the cooperation of the federal government such a program is being ing seriously considered in california not so much from the standpoint of public healt li because that feature is supervised by an army of pub public c health officers but for purely economic reasons for the benefit of the daily industry I 1 there tere is a very decided sentiment ion on the part of milk distributors that i should be eradicated from dairy waira herds this feeling has developed to such an extent that the man with unhealthy or untested cows iloe doe not realize as much for his product as the man with a clean tested herd this fact is 13 doing more than anything else to eliminate the unclean herds for when the dain dairy mans pocketbook is directly affected it is not difficult for him to realize that he cannot afford to handle other than strictly clean cows not only are the dairymen marketing reactor cows but they are also culling their herds of animals which are not producing enough milk to represent some profit to the owners the result is that thousands off of cattle of dairy strains are passing into beef channels to some extent helpap the beef supply and their r ready eady ja is ia made po possible ss ible through the co constantly ns tan aly broadening outlets for all classes of beef animals through the 0 pen open markets at the packing centers throughout n the country the passing of dairy stock into beef channels Js i nothing new and even in the face of unusual unusually heavy offerings offering of this character at present it is i unlikely that it will have an ap preci able effect upon the price levels of beef animals as the dairy offerings largely go into trade channels not taken care of by the usual beef supply it is is noticeable that many dairymen have taken advantage of the present situation to sell off their low I 1 producing cows using the proceeds duc to M make ake replacements with more productive live animals and in many cases the sale of three poor producers will make possible the purchase of o heavy producers there never was a more favorable time from the standpoint of ma market arket values for the dairymen to sell off his unprofitable cows at the public markets and the general opinion is is that cattle price levels will occupy a strong position for some time to come |
