Show SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT OUR independence DAY celebration I 1 the fourth of july of 1928 is jur jut t like its famous predecessor one hundred and fifty two years ago history not that it brought any events of big historical moment but that it is behind us like every place in these vast united states state from that gotham with seven million people to the smallest hamlet where two or three families are starting a new community richfield celebrated the natal day jar of our count countr rys vs independence we like to utter a few afterthoughts about our celebration and state first that it was thoroughly worthy of the occasion and a splendid testimony of the ardor and sincerity of our patriotic feeling yet in our opinion the observance would have been bee n still moie impressive had our business men bedded the call of the parade committee and entered some floats to lengthen that very short parade of course their omis omission might have been the effect of a certain cause this cause being the orl richfield sin sin of never being punctual we start jances dances half balfan an hour before half of our people c come 1 to iv our shows when the first act i is s over or still worse annoy those who came in time by coming in in the middle of the act and disturbing those who were punctual if we ne announce a political meeting for 8 p in we can safely wager a b bet et that it will be before it starts start and so it seems to be with aith the parade announced for 30 10 and started from the gathering point ten minutes after eleven business men seem to be a little better trained to punctuality and might have been disgusted with with this not at all unusual delay another thing that we would have liked omitted in our fourth of july celebration i is a good deal of the noise created by fire crackers and similar instruments of torture if our parents would have read the salt lake papers they woula hae seen that great efforts were made in our capital city to make the independence day I 1 observance as dignified as possible by avoiding unnecessary noise why not follow the example so et by our state capital for years and years educators preachers and newspapers have talked and written about a sane and safe fourth we wonder nonder how many more years it will take to make our fourth of july celebrations sane and safe in fact if the parents would think a little of how many dangers are arc connected with this nonsensical use iise of hand band fireworks they would not permit the children to use them so much luckily no serious accident happened in our city but a hip big conflagration fla was nas avoided only by prompt action when one of those fire crackers almost caused the explosion of a gasoline tank in front of the central utah butali garage As beautiful and sincerely as the fourth of july was cel celebrated in richfield there is still room for improvement and we hope that 1929 will bring us that sane and safe fourth |
